Nascimento was born in Rio de Janeiro, and grew up in Três Pontas, Minas Gerais. His mother was the maid Maria do Carmo Nascimento. When he was just a few months old, the boy was adopted by the family for whom his mother had previously worked: the couple Josino Brito Campos (a banker, mathematics teacher and electronic technician) and Lília Silva Campos (a music teacher). He lived in the boroughs of Laranjeiras and Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. When he was 18 months old, his biological mother died and he moved with his adoptive parents to the city of Três Pontas, in the State of Minas Gerais.
In the earlier stages of his career, Nascimento played in two samba groups, Evolussamba and Sambacana. In 1963 he moved to Belo Horizonte, and his friendship with the Borges brothers (Marilton, Márcio e Lô Borges) led to the Clube da Esquina ("corner club") movement. Other members included Beto Guedes, Toninho Horta, Wagner Tiso, and Flavio Venturini.
Nascimento is famous for his chime-clear falsetto and tonal range, as well for highly acclaimed songs such as "Canção da América" ("Song from America") and "Coração de Estudante" ("Student's Heart"). The lyrics of "Coração de Estudante" remembers the funeral of the student Edson Luís, killed by police officers in 1968. The song became the hymn for the diretas Já campaign in 1984 and it was also played in the funeral of the late president Tancredo Neves the next year, who died before assuming the presidency.
While his reputation within Brazil was firmly established with his Clube da Esquina works, Nascimento's international breakthrough came with his appearance on jazz saxophonist Wayne Shorter's 1974 album "Native Dancer". This led to widespread acclaim, and collaborations with American stars such as Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Pat Metheny.
Through his friendship with guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, Nascimento came to work with the pop-rock band Duran Duran in 1993. Nascimento co-wrote and performed (in the Portuguese language) the song "Breath After Breath", featured on the band's 1993 album "Duran Duran". He also performed with the band in concert when they toured in Brazil, in support of that album. Nascimento earned a Grammy award for "Best World Music Album" in 1998 for his album "Nascimento", and was also nominated in 1991 and 1995.

Em que minha mãe se reconheça
Todas as mães se reconheçam
E que fale como dois olhos
Caminho por uma rua
Que passa em muitos países
Se não me vêem, eu vejo
Eu distribuo segredos
Como quem ama ou sorri
No jeito mais natural
Dois carinhos se procuram
Minha vida, nossas vidas
Formam um só diamante
Aprendi novas palavras
E tornei outras mais belas
Eu preparo uma canção
Que faça acordar os homens
E adormecer as crianças
Eu preparo uma canção
Que faça acordar os homens
E adormecer as crianças
The lyrics of Milton Nascimento's song "Canção Amiga" carry a deep sense of introspection and a profound desire for unity and connection. The opening lines, "Eu preparo uma canção / Em que minha mãe se reconheça" (I prepare a song / In which my mother recognizes herself), express the artist's intention to create a piece of music that resonates with his own mother, and by extension, with all mothers. This speaks to the universal experience of motherhood and the powerful bond between a mother and child.
Continuing on, Nascimento sings, "Todas as mães se reconheçam" (All mothers recognize themselves), emphasizing the inclusive nature of his message. It is a call for empathy and understanding, urging not only his own mother but all mothers to see themselves in his song. This sentiment extends to the following line, "E que fale como dois olhos" (And that speaks like two eyes). Here, Nascimento alludes to the idea that his song aims to communicate on a deeply personal and heartfelt level, much like a direct gaze into another person's eyes.
The next verses take a more introspective turn, as Nascimento describes himself walking down a street that passes through multiple countries. The line "Se não me vêem, eu vejo" (If they don't see me, I see) portrays a sense of self-awareness and the ability to perceive and acknowledge one's surroundings even when others may not notice or acknowledge oneself. The artist then goes on to greet old friends, symbolizing the importance of connections and how they create a sense of familiarity and comfort.
As the song progresses, Nascimento sings, "Eu distribuo segredos / Como quem ama ou sorri" (I distribute secrets / Like someone who loves or smiles). This line showcases the artist's desire to share intimate and meaningful experiences with others, much like the way love and smiles are freely given. It reflects his belief in the power of openness and vulnerability in fostering connections and creating a sense of community.
The final stanza states, "Minha vida, nossas vidas / Formam um só diamante" (My life, our lives / Form one single diamond). This line beautifully encapsulates the theme of unity and interconnectedness that runs throughout the song. Nascimento suggests that our individual lives are, in fact, interconnected, forming a precious and unified whole. The chorus repeats the sentiment from the beginning, emphasizing the artist's intention to craft a song that awakens the consciousness of men and lulls children to sleep. It is a profound call to bridge gaps, foster understanding, and create harmony among all individuals, no matter their age or background.
