Cry Me A River
Mina Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now you say you're lonely,
You cried the whole night through.
Well you can cry me a river,
Cry me a river,
I cried a river over you.

Now you say you're sorry,
For being so untrue.
Well you can cry me a river,
Cry me a river,
I cried a river over you.

You drove me, nearly drove me,
Out of my head;
While you never shed a tear.

Remember, I remember,
All that you said;
Told me love was too plebian,
Told me you were through with me-

And Now you say you love me,
Well, just to prove you do,
Come on and cry me a river,
Cry me a river,

I cried a river over you x4

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mina's song Cry Me A River are a classic example of a break-up song. It's about a lover who has been wronged and is now being approached by the one who was at fault. The song commences with the person who was wronged being taunted by the other, who says they are now alone and have been crying all night. The person being addressed in the song tells them to cry them a river, to let out all their emotions of sadness and regret. The repetition of 'cry me a river' in the chorus as a mocking retort reveals the raw emotion of the singer who has lost trust in their lover. They have already been through the same cycle of hurt and rejection and now, they are only capable of detachment and sarcasm.

The second verse is even more scathing in its approach. The singer tells their love that they once drove them out of their mind, but they never bothered to shed a tear. The flashback of memories reminds the singer of all the hurt they received in the past. The song alludes to the fact that the relationship ended because the other person was never a sincere lover. They told the singer that love is too plebeian, too dull and ordinary for them. They had become tired of the singer, and now that they regret their past actions, they expect the singer to come back without acknowledging their faults. In the end, the singer tells them to cry a river, to prove their love for them, just as they had earlier cried a river over them. It's as if the singer has moved on and has no intention of giving the love of their life another chance.
