Oh Romeo
Mindy McCready Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Juliet waits at the border
Of a creek without a corner
Gazes into the dark
Was it the moon or only
Her fear of being lonely
That gave her leave of her heart?
Oh, oh, oh
Oh Romeo (Romeo)
Who would lay down her life? (Romeo)
Swallow the poison, beck of the night
Maybe I cried (maybe I cried)
Just a teardrop or two (tear or two)
I would not die for you
I would not die for you

Just another romantic depressant
Giving in she becomes obsessive
Maybe this time I'll learn
Life's like a box of matches
Sometimes the whole thing catches
And all you can do is watch it burn
Oh, oh, oh

Oh Romeo (Romeo)
Who would lay down her life? (Romeo)
Swallow the poison, beck of the night
Maybe I cried (maybe I cried)
Just a teardrop or two (tear or two)
I would not die for you
I would not die for you

La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la la la la la la

Juliet waits at the border
Contemplates a new world order

Oh Romeo (Romeo)
Who would lay down her life? (Romeo)
Swallow the poison, beck of the night
Maybe I cried (maybe I cried)
Just a teardrop or two (tear or two)
I would not die for you
I would not die for you

I would not die for you

Oh Romeo, oh Romeo, oh Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, Romeo
Oh Romeo, Romeo, Romeo, Romeo

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mindy McCready's song Oh Romeo are a modern retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet's tragic story of love and death. The song opens up with the image of Juliet waiting at the border of a creek without a corner, gazing into the dark. She is afraid of being lonely and wonders if it was the moon or her fear that led her heart to give in to Romeo. The next stanza describes Juliet's longing to lay down her life for Romeo, to swallow the poison, beck of the night, but as the song progresses, she realizes that life is not just about romantic love, it is like a box of matches, and sometimes the whole thing catches, and all you can do is watch it burn.

The chorus, "Oh Romeo, who would lay down her life? Swallow the poison, beck of the night, maybe I cried, just a teardrop or two, I would not die for you" depicts the conflict between Juliet's romanticism and the reality that we don't always get what we want. The ending of the song comes full circle with Juliet still waiting at the border but contemplating a new world order, indicating a departure from her previous idealistic notions of love and death.

Perfection.

@FeatheryBird

I find this song and several other elements of her career highly disturbing in lieu of circumstances. The very first words of her debut " Speakin of the Devil, look who just walked in", and in this song the phrase "new world order". She obviously had no idea how they used her. I will speak not of they who can not be spoken of. Check the live version of her on the BBC and notice the set. Few singers ever recorded had her emotional range or genre crossing capabilities. RIP Mindy
