The Longbottom Legacy
Ministry of Magic Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Chorus (Luke)
Never been anything
Never lived up to their esteem
My blood is torn
Biding our name forlorn

*Verse 1 (Jason and Mark)
I need you here, right here with me
I’m stitching together every tatter you’re offering
Can I take our name past this tragedy?
Your legacy is what is steadily driving me
Forward

(Luke)
Never been anything
Never lived up to their esteem
My blood is torn
Biding our name forelorn
Biding our name forelorn

*Verse 2 (Aaron and Ryan)
I know you’re here, right here with me
Guiding me onward with every memory
I can take our name past this tragedy
Your legacy is what is steadily driving me
Forward

(Luke)
Never been anything
Never lived up to their esteem
My blood is torn
Biding our name forelorn
Biding our name forelorn

*Bridge (Mark)
This tragedy
Could never be
Anything
When you’re here with me

(Ryan)
Maybe sometimes you think I don’t belong
And even if I fail, I’ll prove you all wrong
But all’s not lost like I lost my toad
Won’t back down because I’m not alone

(Luke)
I can do anything
My friends, my hope, I stand serene
I can do anything
My friends, my hope, I stand serene

(Mark)
Anything
When you’re here with me

(Luke, Ryan, and Mark)
-This tragedy
Maybe sometimes you think don’t belong
-Could never be
And even if I fail, I’ll prove you all wrong
-Anything
But all’s not lost like I lost my toad
-When you’re here with me
Won’t back down because I’m not alone

(Mark)
Anything
When you’re here with me

(Luke)
Torn, torn, torn, torn

Torn, torn, torn, torn
I can do anything

Overall Meaning

The Longbottom Legacy by Ministry of Magic is a song about the burden of living up to the legacy of one's forebears. The chorus, sung by Luke, expresses the feeling of inadequacy and the struggle to live up to the expectations set by one's family. The Longbottoms have a particularly tragic legacy, with Neville's parents having been tortured to insanity by Death Eaters. The first verse, sung by Jason and Mark, shows the need for guidance and support in order to carry on the family name. The second verse, sung by Aaron and Ryan, shows that the legacy of the Longbottoms, despite its tragedy, can be a source of strength and motivation. The bridge, sung by Mark, emphasizes the importance of familial support in overcoming tragedy. The song's final message is that with the support of family and friends, even the most difficult legacy can be overcome.
