Where Is The Love
Minus Six Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And at the same moment someone in their family passed away
It's funny how in life things happen for a reason
Leaves change, they fall, then we're in another season and
The hippies tell me that's what makes this precious world go around
To help a brother, when a brother is seem to falling down
I open up my eyes; I'm looking, searching all around
I'm having trouble finding what I should have found
And so I'm wondering:
Are we are all going to unite?
Are we going to stand up straight, not give in?
It's time we stop the wars
Time we search some more
Open our eyes and let peace in
I hear this talk of the bible and I hear you speak of this lord up above
And the question I'm not understanding is: Where is the love?
Think back
Remember in the '70s when protesting was common smoking pot and trying LSD
People weren't afraid to fight for what they felt was right
It doesn't matter if you're gay or straight
Or if you're black or white
I think it's time to take a look at what the world's become
Cause I see people acting like they think that we're the only ones
Open up your eyes and realize that we are not awake
There's other generations that will suffer cause of our mistakes
Are we are all going to unite?
Are we going to stand up straight, not give in?
It's time we stop the wars
Time we search some more
Open our eyes and let peace in
I hear this talk of the bible and I hear you speak of this lord up above
And the question I'm not understanding is, tell me, where is the love?
I will fight, I will stand up
I will fight, I will stand up
(I will fight, I will stand up)
(I will fight, I will stand up) I think it's time
(I will fight, I will stand up)
(I will fight, I will stand up) I think it's time
(I will fight, I will stand up)
(I will fight, I will stand up)
(I will fight, I will stand up) We should get along when everything is coming down
(I will fight, I will stand up) There's children suffering, there's poverty all around
(I will fight, I will stand up) Our world's collapsing and we haven't done a thing
(I will fight, I will stand up) Think of what we could create if together we would sing
The lyrics to Minus Six's "Where Is the Love" tell a story of a woman who announces her baby's arrival right as someone in her family passes away. This juxtaposition of new life and death highlights the circular nature of life and the way things happen for a reason. The song then moves on to discuss the need for unity in the world, with references to the hippie movement of the 70s and the current political climate. The singer questions why people are fighting and not coming together in love, and wonders where the love has gone. The song ends with a call to action, urging people to stand up and fight for peace.
The overarching message of the song is the need for unity and love in the world. The lyrics emphasize the importance of coming together and fighting for what is right, and they point out the harm that is caused by division and fighting. By highlighting both the beauty and the darkness of life, the song encourages listeners to open their eyes and take action. The reference to the hippie movement of the 70s adds a layer of nostalgia and reminds listeners of a time when people were more willing to fight for what they believed in.

The sad thing is this song isn’t as relevant as it was in 2003 it’s more relevant little did us kids know back then that the tragic events in sept. 2001 were only the beginning of the sad seismic shift of society social media made us even more isolated more divided and more contentious with our neighbors. I know I’m only about to turn 30 but even since my childhood it’s so saddening to see what’s happening to this world this song hit me even harder listening to it today than it did as a 9/10 year old. May our world see a day where the simplicity and peace I knew as a child is restored. Where we can restore the concept of neighborliness again and see a world where people who seemed different could bond and become friends. Where codes and certain unspoken rules of common courtesy matter. Now that those in my generation are adults, let us all show an example of the change we wish to see in the world.
