Nature Boy
Mirabilis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There was a boy
A very strange enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he

And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me:

"The greatest thing you'll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return"

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Mirabilis's song Nature Boy are both enchanting and profound. The first verse describes a boy who is strange and enchanted, having wandered far across both land and sea, and though he is shy and sad of eye, he is also very wise. The second verse speaks to a magical encounter between the singer and the boy, during which they spoke of many things, including fools and kings. The boy then imparts a universal truth to the singer, proclaiming that the greatest thing one can ever learn is to love and be loved in return.

The lyrics of "Nature Boy" offer a compelling message about the importance of love, but they are also notable for their origins. The song was written by Eden Ahbez, a musician, poet, and philosopher who lived a bohemian lifestyle in 1940s Los Angeles. Ahbez was inspired to write "Nature Boy" after meeting a young man in Griffith Park who had been living in a cave and surviving on a diet of nuts and fruits. Ahbez saw the young man as a kind of prophet of nature, and his encounter with him inspired the lyrics of the song.
