Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Baggage Claim
Miranda Lambert Lyrics

Making sure that your bags arrive on time for the dog and pony show
Leather suitcase like a brick, it kinda makes it hard to get a good grip
I drop your troubles off at the conveyor belt, I hand you a ticket to go get it yourself
At the baggage claim, you got a lot of luggage in your name
When you hit the ground, check the lost and found
'Cause it ain't my problem now
It's all over the yard, in the trunk of the car
I'm packin' it in so come and get it
If it ain't obvious what has set me off today
Behind every woman scorned is a man who made her that way
Go on and take your little business trip with that sweet little habit that you can't kick
You better call your momma when you get to town 'cause I ain't gonna be hangin' around
At the baggage claim, you got a lot of luggage in your name
When you hit the ground, check the lost and found
Because it ain't my problem now
I can't carry it on, I've got a lot of troubles of my own
It's all over the yard, in the trunk of the car
And I'm packin' it in so come and get it
Come and pick it up, pick it up
Before I blow it up in flames
You better pick it up, pick it up
Baby, I'm leaving everything
At the baggage claim, you got a lot of luggage in your name
And when you hit the ground, check the lost and found
Because it ain't my problem now
I can't carry it on, I've got a lot of troubles of my own
It's all over the yard, in the trunk of the car
Well, I'm packin' it in so come and get it
Come and get yo shit
The lyrics of Miranda Lambert's "Baggage Claim" depict a disillusioned woman who has had enough of her partner's emotional baggage. Throughout the song, Lambert symbolically refers to the issues and troubles of her partner as luggage that she has been dragging around for him. She highlights her frustration with his sensitive ego and the constant need for attention, represented by him expecting her to make sure his bags arrive on time for the "dog and pony show."
Lambert is tired of carrying his baggage and drops it off at the conveyor belt for him to collect himself. She can't deal with his issues anymore, and even compares his luggage to a brick, making it hard to get a good grip. She emphasizes that it's not her problem anymore and that she has her own troubles to deal with. The song's chorus repeats the phrase, "At the baggage claim, you got a lot of luggage in your name, when you hit the ground, check the lost and found, 'cause it ain't my problem now." Lambert is making it clear that she is done carrying her partner's emotional baggage and that she's not going to be responsible for it anymore.
The final verse of the song implies that this is not the first time that her partner's behavior has caused issues. She suggests that he's probably going on a business trip, probably to indulge in an addiction that he can't kick. Lambert tells him to call his mom because she's not going to be around when he returns. She makes it clear that she has already packed up his baggage and that he needs to come and get it himself.
