Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Dear Old Sun
Miranda Lambert Lyrics

How you holding up
Through the winter cold
Up there all alone
February's been hard on a heart
But we're near the end
And it's almost March
Though the skys been grey
Well, you melt the snow
And you grow the roses
And you dry the tears
And you freckle noses
Our little world
Revolves around
You coming up and going down
(Oh oh oh)
Dear old sun
Lets call it a day
And I watch you set
I'll let you rest
But wait for you
At mornings due
Till I see your light
(Oh oh oh)
I still see your light
I still see your light
Heaven shining down tonight
I still see your light
I still see your light
I still see your light
Heaven shining down tonight
I still see your light
Oh Oh Oh
In Miranda Lambert's song "Dear Old Sun," the lyrics are a reflection on the enduring power and beauty of the sun. The singer addresses the sun as if it is a person, asking how it is coping with the winter cold and being alone up in the sky. The month of February has been challenging for the singer's heart, but they express hope by acknowledging that they are nearing the end and approaching the arrival of March. Despite the grey skies that may have blocked the sun's light, the singer still recognizes its consistent presence and the way it illuminates their world.
The chorus emphasizes the sun's vital role in nature and human lives. It is described as melting the snow, growing flowers like roses, drying tears, and even freckling noses. The singer acknowledges that their whole world revolves around the sun's rising and setting, indicating its significance as a constant and guiding force. Even as they observe the sun setting and allow it to rest, they eagerly anticipate its return at dawn, symbolizing their reliance on its light and warmth.
Overall, the lyrics of "Dear Old Sun" celebrate the sun as a source of comfort, hope, and renewal. It reminds us of the immense impact that nature can have on our emotions and daily lives, and how we find solace in its consistency and beauty.
