Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

I got the gun
I got a hankerin'
For gettin' into somethin'
I hit the bottle
You hit the gas
I heard your '65
Could really haul some ass
I'm feelin' frisky
You're feelin' good
I guess the whiskey
Is doin' what it should
I got the cigarettes
You got a lighter
And when the sun goes down
We'll start a little fire
Ain't no use in tryin'
To slow me down
'Cause you're runnin'
With the fastest girl in town
Ain't ya baby
I like 'em crazy
My reputation
Follows me around
Just makes me wanna give 'em
More to talk about
Let's go to town
For a little while
I'll be wearing nothin'
But a tattoo and a smile
Ain't no use in tryin'
To slow me down
'Cause you're runnin'
With the fastest girl in town
Ain't ya baby
You're kinda crazy
Come on!
I see the blue lights
We better run
Throw out the bottle
And I'll hide the gun
If he pulls us over
I'll turn on the charm
You'll be in the slammer
And I'll be on his arm
Ain't no use in tryin'
To slow me down
'Cause you're runnin'
With the fastest girl in town
Ain't ya baby
Well I told ya I was crazy
No, I ain't nobody's baby
Huh!
He's got the bullets
He's got a gun
I got the hankerin'
For gettin' into somethin'
The song "Fastest Girl In Town" by Miranda Lambert is a thrilling, high-octane song about two thrill-seekers who hit the road to get into some wild and dangerous activity. The song opens with the girl, who is daring and adventurous, proclaiming that she has got the "hankerin'" (a yearning or desire) for some excitement. She knows that she's the fastest girl in town and has a reputation for being wild, but she enjoys it, and it makes her feel alive. The chorus reinforces the fact that there's no slowing her down, and anyone who tries to keep up with her needs to have stamina, courage, and plenty of adrenaline.
The second verse talks about the way that the girl is perceived in the community. The singer notes that her reputation "follows her around," but instead of being ashamed, she relishes in it and longs for even more attention. She and her companion speed towards a town, where she plans to make a statement, wearing nothing but a tattoo and a smile. The song takes a dangerous turn when they spot the blue lights, and the two are forced to run from the law and throw out their bottle of alcohol. Despite the risk of getting caught, the girl remains unfazed, as she's the fastest girl in town, and nothing will stop her from getting what she wants.
