Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

First you love then you hate it
Someones laughing, someones crying
Someones living, someones dying
Somebody always loses
And we still play the game
And the fire will always burn you
And we still light the flame
Cause I ain't gonna fight
If you're the death of me darlin'
I wanna die
You always say that you love me
And there is no one above me
Never givin', always takin'
Never bendin', always breakin'
I know you ain't a liar
But you don't tell the truth
And you're walkin' on a wire
Wearin' someone else's shoes
You're handing out misery
Ill be the first in line
If you're the death of me darlin'
I wanna die
Tear it up, break it down
Put my heart on your sleeve
And wear it all over town
I know your a player
But you don't play by the rules
And I'm just another
In a long line of fools
Yeah, its so complicated
I love it then hate it
I'm laughin', your cryin'
Your livin', I'm dyin'
Somebody always loses
And we still play the game
Yeah, the fire will
Always burn you and
We still light the flame
Lets make it up baby
Cause I ain't gonna fight
If your the death of me darlin'
I wanna die
Tear it up, break it down
Put my heart on your sleeve
And wear it all over town
I know your a player
But you don't play by the rules
And I'm just another
In a long line of fools
Yeah, its so complicated
I love it then hate it
I'm laughin', your cryin'
I'm livin', your dyin'
I know you ain't a liar
But you don't tell the truth
And you're walkin' on a wire
Wearin' someone else's shoes
You're handing out misery
Ill be the first in line
If you're the death of me darlin'
I wanna die
I wanna die
Tear it up
Tear it up
The lyrics of Miranda Lambert's "I Wanna Die" express the complexities of a deeply flawed relationship. The first two lines introduce the contradictory nature of the love-hate dichotomy that is often present in such relationships. It is described as a game that someone always loses, but despite the risk of being burnt, they continue to play with fire. However, the singer is willing to make amends because she doesn't want to fight, and if this relationship ends up killing her, she wants to die.
The next verse highlights the one-sided nature of the relationship, where one party offers love while the other takes it without reciprocation. Despite this, the singer knows what lies ahead while being unable to resist being in a relationship where she will be hurt. In the bridge, she exposes the insecurities of being played and yet being willing to put herself out there at the risk of being hurt.
Overall, the lyrics explore the difficult emotions and desires that come with relationships that are not healthy. The song shows that despite knowing the relationship may be destructive, people can still be drawn into it, and they may even find themselves wanting it to end them. The lyrics are relatable to anyone who's ever been in a difficult relationship full of mixed emotions.
