Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

And my Tony Lomas
And my Dodge Dart classic
You said "I'll be Johhny and you be June
And I'll ride with you to the moon"
But guess what?
You can't ride in my little red wagon
You can't step to this backyard swagger
You know it ain't my fault when I'm walkin' jaws droppin' like
Ooh, ah, ooh, ah
Oh, heaven help me
I've been sewing wildflower seeds
And chasing tumble weeds
But that's just who I be
And you're just trying to slow this rolling stone
But I'm on to you baby
So guess what?
You can't ride in my little red wagon
The front seat's broken and the axel's dragin'
No you can't step to this backyard swagger
You know it ain't my fault when I'm walkin' jaws droppin' like
Ooh, ah, ooh, ah
Oh, you only love me for my big sun glasses
And my Tony Lomas
I live in Oklahoma
And I've got long, blonde hair
And I play guitar, and I go on the road
And I do all the shit you wanna do
And my dog does tricks
And I ain't about drama, ya'll
I love my apron
But I ain't your mama!
So guess what?
You can't ride in my little red wagon
The front seat's broken and the axel's dragin'
No you can't step to this backyard swagger
You know it ain't my fault when I'm walkin' jaws droppin' like
Ooh, ahh, ooh, ahh, ooh yeah, ooh ha
Miranda Lambert's "Little Red Wagon" is a sassy and upbeat country song about a woman who refuses to put up with a man who only loves her for her material possessions. The lyrics are filled with references to her big sunglasses, Tony Lomas shoes, Dodge Dart classic car, and her Oklahoma roots. The opening lines suggest that the man is only interested in her for these things, and doesn't care about who she really is. The chorus drives home the point that he can't ride in her little red wagon because it's broken down and dragging, symbolizing that their relationship is on the rocks and she is not willing to let him ride along anymore.
Throughout the song, Lambert asserts her independence and confidence, highlighting that she is not willing to change who she is for anyone. She identifies as a wildflower-seeding, tumble weed-chasing, guitar-playing, dog-loving, apron-wearing, drama-free woman who isn't interested in being anyone's "mama." By rejecting the man's advances, she is taking control of her own life and showing that she won't be used or manipulated.
