Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Population plus one minus one
A new grandma rocks my sister's kid just like twenty years ago she did
The same thing in that same chair
She said “this one's born to run”
Every day at noon like a chapel bell find her Jesus keep her well
Help her do more right than wrong at the end of the day
A guitar and a broken heart just full of things to say
You taught me how to stand those tests and trials
But you can't se a desert sunrise in the bible
She loves me more that anything
And she wants the world for me
Her west dropped of in El Paso,
And her north in Abilene
Mama I'm OK out here
I've seen how hard the world can be
My step is sure and I know my name
I'm strong just like you prayed I'd be
I'm strong just like you prayed I'd be
If I'd have done what you and daddy done, would have never lost and never won
Or gotten myself kicked when I was down
I would not know how to travel well, A hundred bucks and cheap motels
I would not know how to fight for my own heart next time around
Now don't you cry another night about me
In this city I've got angels all around me
She loves me more that anything
And she wants the world for me
Her west dropped of in El Paso
And her north in Abilene
Hey Mama I'm OK out here
I've seen how hard the world can be
My step is sure and I know my name
I'm strong just like you prayed I'd be
I'm strong just like you prayed I'd be
I felt it every time you prayed for me
I'm strong just like you prayed I'd be
The song "Mama I'm Alright" by Miranda Lambert is a touching tribute to a mother's love and guidance. The opening lines describe a small Texas town where a new grandmother is taking care of the singer's sister's child, just like she did 20 years ago. The grandmother believes that the child is born to run and encourages her to pursue her dreams. The singer then reminisces about her upbringing and the values her mother instilled in her - to always try to do more right than wrong.
The chorus is a reassurance to her mother that she is doing well despite the challenges she faces. She acknowledges that the world can be tough, but credits her mother's guidance for giving her the strength and confidence to overcome obstacles. She speaks of her mother's desire for her to have the world, but reminds her that she has the strength and resilience to attain that on her own.
