Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Mess with My Head
Miranda Lambert Lyrics

Two feather pillows with expensive sheets
Sitting so pretty on my velvet couch
Before you came around
You treat my mind like a hotel room
And I know why I gave the keys to you
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
Maybe it's wrong but it feels right to me
Reveling in reverse psychology
You complicate it with your lying lips
I'm waiting on a kiss
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my bed
Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor
If it ain't love then I like it better than before
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my heart
You treat my mind like a hotel room
And I know why I gave the keys to you
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my bed
Waking up to a wreck with blue jeans on the floor
If ain't love then I like it better than before
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
I let you mess with my, mess with my head
In Miranda Lambert's song "Mess with My Head," the lyrics describe the internal struggle of a woman who is aware of how her lover's manipulation of her mind has changed her, yet she continues to let him in. The opening lines, "I had the palace looking nice and neat/Two feather pillows with expensive sheets/Sitting so pretty on my velvet couch/Before you came around," convey the idea that she was content in her life before this person entered it. However, despite this, she continues to give into his manipulation.
The chorus of the song, "I let you mess with my, mess with my head," highlights how aware she is of the situation she is in, yet she still lets it happen. The line, "Maybe it's wrong, but it feels right to me/Reveling in reverse psychology," shows how her lover is making her second-guess her own feelings and questioning what is right or wrong. The line, "If it ain't love, then I like it better than before," indicates that she knows what's happening between them isn't entirely right or healthy, but she's still enjoying it.
Overall, the song portrays a complex and complicated relationship dynamic, where the singer is aware of the toxicity but is struggling to let go.
