Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Five hundred year, five hundred thousand miles
It don't matter now, love's always on time
Meet me underneath the Oklahoma sky
Lightening flashed, everything went silence
A feather could have knocked me to the floor
A missing piece was found I was finally alive
With the speed of sound
I am homeward bound
All our sorrows swept away forever
Each and every tear washed out to sea
There ain't no good-bye, with your hand in mine
Meet me underneath the Oklahoma sky
Oklahoma sky
Miranda Lambert's Oklahoma Sky is a song about a long journey to find love and finally getting it. The singer in the song describes how it has taken them centuries and miles to find the person they're looking for, but it doesn't matter anymore because love is always on time. The singer invites their love interest to meet them under the Oklahoma sky, where they know they'll be happy together.
In the second verse, the singer describes a moment when they finally find the missing piece of their life and feel alive. The intensity of that moment is depicted when lightning flashed, and everything went silent. The singer feels like a feather could have knocked them to the floor because the discovery is so powerful. The chorus is then repeated with the added line, "With the speed of sound, I am homeward bound," implying that finding true love has been a homecoming for the singer.
The last verse of the song describes how all sorrows are swept away forever and every tear washed out to sea. The singer assures their love interest that there is no goodbye as long as they are holding hands under the Oklahoma sky. Overall, the song celebrates the beauty of love, the importance of finding the right person, and how love can make us feel alive and at home.
