Only Prettier
Miranda Lambert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I've been saved by the grace of southern charm
I got a mouth like a sailor and yours is more like a Hallmark card
If you wanna pick a fight well I'm gonna have to say goodnight
I don't have to be hateful, I can just say bless your heart

And even though I don't belong with your high life friends
Doesn't mean we don't get together and try to make amends
It's easier can't you see lets agree to just disagree
We don't have to like each other but its sure fun to pretend

So lets shake hands and reach across those party lines
You got your friends just like I got mine
We might think a little differently
But we got a lot in common you will see
We're just like you, only prettier

Everybody says you gotta know your enemies
Even if they only weigh a hundred pounds and stand five foot three
If you just smile and behave you could always get your way
It's a universal plan that'll get you where you can in all societies

So lets shake hands and reach across those party lines
You got your friends just like I got mine
We might think a little differently
But we got a lot in common you will see
We're just like you, only prettier

Lets shake hands and reach across those party lines
You got your friends just like I got mine
We might think a little differently
But we got a lot in common you will see
We're just like you, only prettier

Well I'll keep drinkin' and you'll keep gettin' skinnier

Hey I'm just like you only prettier
She says just like you only prettier

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Miranda Lambert's song "Only Prettier" explore themes of southern charm, grace, and the idea of conflict resolution through pretending, even if it's not genuine. She sings about having a strong personality, describing herself as having a "mouth like a sailor" in contrast to someone whose speech is more like a Hallmark card. Lambert recognizes that even though she doesn't belong to the same social circle as those around her, it's important to come together and try to find common ground. She acknowledges that while we might not necessarily like each other, pretending can still be fun.

The song emphasizes the importance of bridging differences and working towards common goals despite different beliefs, values or backgrounds. Lambert's message is clear, finding differences is the easy and predictable route, but what really takes a lot of courage and strength is taking the extra step towards reconciliation.

Overall, "Only Prettier" is an anthem for embracing differences, respecting others in all societies and celebrating what makes every individual unique.

My favorite line is "I've got a mouth like a sailor and yours is more like a hallmark card"

I'm a grown man and I used to feel shame that this was one of my favorite songs. But no more. The song itself not even the lyrics just the song is so well composed and catchy..... But if we are gonna talk about lyrics I have 2 of them that always made me smile. " We don't have to like each other but it's sure fun to pretend"
And the very beginning of the Chorus. Again not the words but the compisition. How she draws out "Leeeeeeets shake hands and reach across those party lines. Youve got your friends just like Ive got miiiine."
It slows down the hoppy feel to the song and emphasizes the point shes making.

I just love that Miranda doesn't always sing about love and heartbreakes but also about normal problems and things in live and a lot about freedom (new strings, only prettier, fastest girl in town)
