Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Something That I Like About a Honky Tonk
Miranda Lambert Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
whiskey drinkin cowboys and lonesome country songs
wonderin if I'll fall in love or if I won't
well there's somethin that I like about a honky tonk
guess that all my life I've been a runnin' round
playin all the honky tonks from town to town
I'm just not the kind to ever settle down
there's somethin' that I like about a honky tonk
whiskey drinkin cowboys and lonesome country songs
wonderin if I'll fall in love or if I won't
there's somethin that I like about a honky tonk
well I've had my share of dancin' partners that's for sure
but I've never two-stepped my way into love before
but every night you'll see me crawlin back for more
cus' I just can't seem to stay away from swingin doors
well there's somethin that i like about a honky tonk
there's somethin that i like about a honky tonk
whiskey drinkin; cowboys and lonesome country songs
wonderin' if I'll fall in love or if I won't
well there's somethin that I like about a honky tonk
there's somethin that I like
about those neon lights
In "Something That I Like About a Honky Tonk," Miranda Lambert expresses her love for honky tonks and the atmosphere that comes with them. She is drawn to the whiskey-drinking cowboys and the lonesome country songs that are played in these venues. She is uncertain if she will fall in love or not, but there is still an allure to these places that she cannot resist. The lyrics suggest that Lambert has been playing in honky tonks for a long time, moving from town to town, and despite not being the settling kind, these venues have remained a constant in her life.
The first verse sets the tone of the song with Lambert declaring that there is something special about honky tonks that draws her to them. The second verse reveals Lambert's history of playing in honky tonks and her inability to settle down. The chorus emphasizes the uncertainty of love and the comfort found in honky tonks. The bridge shows Lambert's resilience and how she keeps coming back for more despite not finding love in these places.
The lyrics showcase Lambert's honky tonk roots and her love for the genre. They also highlight the feeling of community that can come from a honky tonk. The song suggests that even though love may not always be found in these places, there is still something special that makes them worth going to.
