Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

Tomboy
Miranda Lambert Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Never needs a dress to make her pretty
She's a killjoy, such a let down
Daddy tried to raise a southern belle
Well, he got a tomboy
Tomboy in between
Dirt in her nails and holes in her jeans
And ride out like a rodeo queen
Know what I mean
She's a tomboy
Tangled hair and bruises on her knees
She wears her scars outside her sleeves
Always has a way of saying 'no way'
Some people don't get her, but that's okay
Move along boy
She's a tomboy
Barfly, bad betty
Band of brothers that got her back
She's unlady like, like a scout fire
Got her own constellation in the zodiac
Well, who can say that
A tomboy
Tangled hair and bruises on her knees
She's hard to love and hard to please
Always has a way of saying 'no way'
Some people don't get her, but that's okay
Move along boy
She's a tomboy
She's got a softer side she'll never let you see
With tears in her eyes she'd rather be caught dead
Sweet contradiction with no gaurantees
She is what she is
You get what you get
Move along boy
She's a tomboy
Or go along with it boy
You got a tomboy
The song "Tomboy" by Miranda Lambert is an anthem celebrating a girl who is not conforming to societal expectations of femininity. The lyrics depict a girl who is independent, strong-willed, and unapologetically herself. The title itself, "Tomboy," is a term typically used to describe girls who prefer activities that are traditionally associated with boys, such as playing sports or getting dirty.
The opening lines, "Tomboy, Hail Mary, never needs a dress to make her pretty," highlight the girl's self-assuredness and confidence in her own appearance. She doesn't rely on conventional standards of beauty to feel good about herself. The song emphasizes that her unconventional nature is a letdown for her father, who may have hoped for a more "southern belle" type of daughter.
Throughout the song, the lyrics continue to describe the tomboy's traits: tangled hair, bruises on her knees, dirt in her nails, and holes in her jeans. These physical attributes are symbolic of her active and adventurous nature, as she chooses to engage in rough and tumble activities. She may not fit the mold of what society expects from a girl, but she is unapologetically herself.
The chorus of the song reinforces the tomboy's refusal to conform: "Some people don't get her, but that's okay. Move along, boy, she's a tomboy." This line acknowledges that not everyone understands or appreciates her uniqueness, but she doesn't let that bother her. She embraces her identity and moves confidently through life, unbothered by anyone's judgment.
In the bridge, the lyrics suggest that there is a softer side to the tomboy, one that she chooses to keep hidden. Her tears and vulnerability are things she would rather die than show openly. This demonstrates the complexity of her character, showcasing a contrast between her tough exterior and her more tender emotions.
Overall, "Tomboy" celebrates individuality and challenges gender stereotypes by portraying a girl who is proud to be different and unapologetically herself.
