Both of her parents are private investigators, but father Rick is also a country guitarist and songwriter. Lambert became seriously interested in country music after attending a Garth Brooks concert as a young girl, and soon began singing in talent contests under the tutelage of her father.
At 16, Miranda began appearing on the Johnny High Country Music Review in Arlington, Texas, the same show that helped launch the career of LeAnn Rimes. Miranda quickly landed a recording session in Nashville, but left the studio in tears after she became frustrated with the "pop" sound of music that was not her own. Upon returning to Texas, Miranda began writing songs and taking guitar lessons from her father.
When Miranda's aptitude for music became apparent, her parents encouraged her to aggressively pursue singing and acting opportunities. While still a high school student, Miranda made her professional singing debut and fronted the house band at the Reo Palm Isle Ballroom in Longview, Texas, a long-running venue that has showcased Elvis Presley and Willie Nelson.
Foregoing college, Miranda performed throughout Texas in 2001 and 2002. She finished first in the Texas auditions for Nashville Star and eventually placed third on the national competition.

We Should Be Friends

If your heart's as empty as your diesel tank
If all your white t-shirts have stains
If you've got some guts and got some ink, well then
We should be friends
If you borrow dresses like you borrow time
If you dream all day and drink all night
Over men and momma's and Miller Lite, well then
We should be friends
I don't know you well but I know that look
And I can judge the cover 'cause I read the book
On losing sleep and gaining weight
On pain and shame and crazy trains
If you paint your nails while you cut your loss
If you like acting like you're the boss
If everything your daddy says
Is something you can put stock in, well then
We should be friends (come on!)
I don't know you well but I know that look
And I can judge the cover 'cause I wrote the book
On losing sleep and gaining weight
On pain and shame and crazy trains
One, two, three
If you use alcohol as a sedative
And bless your heart as a negative
If you ride your white horse like the wind
If what you see is what you get, well then
Oh, we should be friends
Alright
Wohoo
Wohoo
Wohoo
Well then
Oh, we should be friends
Wohoo
Wohoo
Wohoo
Wohoo
Well then
Oh, we can be friends
In Miranda Lambert's song "We Should Be Friends," she sings about the qualities that make someone interesting and worthy of being her friend. She notes that if your mind is cluttered like your kitchen sink, your heart is empty like your diesel tank, or your white t-shirts have stains, then she could be friends with you. She also mentions that if you have guts and ink or if you're looking for love but willing to fight, then you two could be friends. Lambert acknowledges that she doesn't know the person well, but she can tell a lot about them from their looks and behavior. She relates to the struggles of losing sleep and gaining weight and dealing with pain and shame. Lambert adds that if you use alcohol as a sedative, bless your heart as a negative, or ride your white horse like the wind, then you two should be friends.
