Play
Miranda and the Diamonds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

For the stranger drinking anger
On the rocks at the end of the bar
For the Carolines sipping their wine
Hoping this is where the good ones are
For the lovers making out in a corner booth
For the one over there, don't think I didn't notice you

That's what makes the jukebox play
When you live like neon
There's a song you can lean on
That's what makes the jukebox play
When the night won't end
'Cause it plays over and over and over again

For the belt buckle shiner
She's starting all the fires in her Levi jeans
For the one who doesn't come here anymore
'Cause he's getting over me
For the one stirring up her emotions
In the ice with her fingertips
She showed up with somebody
But that ain't who she's leaving with

That's what makes the jukebox play
When you live like neon
There's a song you can lean on
That's what makes the jukebox play
When the night won't end
'Cause it plays over and over and over again

For my old dive bar with the hand drawn heart
Hanging lonely on the bathroom door
For the old dance hall with the mirror ball
Throwing starlight on the floor

That's what makes the jukebox play
When you live like neon
There's a song you can lean on
That's what makes the jukebox play
When the night won't end
'Cause it plays over and over and over again (ooh)

It plays over and over and over
(Oh, oh yeah, ooh)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Miranda and the Diamonds' song "Play" depict a narrative of an individual who wakes up to find a woman lying beside their bed. The person expresses feelings of loneliness, as though they have done something wrong to merit it. They beseech the woman to take them, suggesting a desire to end the loneliness. The song's chorus describes the two individuals' union as complementary, with one being the sun, and the other being the moon; one, the words, and the other, the tune. The song speaks to the transformative power of love, describing how the woman's song had warmed the night, and what was right had become the singer.

Millions of girls float on their one quote
Living on their last hope, on their last hope
I live my life inside a dream
Only waking when I sleep
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all

My life is a play, is a play, is a play
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming

All I really want is to be wonderful
People in this town they, they can be so cruel
I live my life inside a dream,
only waking when I sleep
If I could sell my sorry soul, I would have it all

My life is a play, is a play, is a play
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming

If only you knew my dear,
How I live my life in fear
If only you knew my dear,
How I know my time is near

Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming

My life is a play, is a play, is a play

Yea, no. She may be good. No doubt about that. But in no ways is she underrated

I CAN'T CHOOSE A NAME!!! Umm she is underrated. What are u talking about? Compared to lana del rey she has way less following, it’s sad. She’s such a good artist and people follow HALSEY AND BILLIE EYELASH. It's annoying

@smile-sq7pt

Lxxrt She may not be very popular, however, she has hit the charts at least once. She also has 1.4 million people who are subbed to her on YT. Yeah, other people, whose music is worst(in your opinion) are more popular. That is very true. However, there are a ton of artists that are very similar to her or make good music(in my opinion) who barely get a few 100K views. Some people even get less than 10K views. Those people are underrated. She deserves to be more popular, yeah I agree. But she is nowhere as underrated as those people.
