Visite de Frollo à Esmeralda
FROLLO

Je suis prêtre et je viens te préparer à mourir

ESMERALDA

J'ai froid, j'ai faim, laissez-moi sortir
Je n'ai rien fait contre personne

FROLLO

Ecoute la cloche qui sonne
Il est cinq heures du matin
Bientôt s'ouvrira cette porte
Dans une heure tu seras morte...

ESMERALDA

Dans une heure je serai bien!

FROLLO

On verra bien si tu danses
Encore devant la potence

ESMERALDA

Qu'est-ce que je vous ai fait
Pour que vous me haïssiez?

FROLLO

Ce n'est pas de la haine
C'est que je t'aime
Je t'aime!

ESMERALDA

Mais qu'est-ce que j'ai dont fait
Pour qu'ainsi vous m'aimiez

Moi pauvre gitane
Et vous curé de Notre-Dame

Overall Meaning

The lyrics are taken from the musical Notre-Dame de Paris and are a conversation between Frollo, a priest, and Esmeralda, a gypsy. Frollo has come to Esmeralda to prepare her for her execution, but she pleads with him to let her go as she has done nothing wrong. Frollo reminds her of the tolling bell and informs her that in an hour's time, she will be dead. Esmeralda challenges this, stating that in one hour, she will be free. Frollo becomes angry and tells her that he wants her dead because he loves her, which confuses Esmeralda as she doesn't understand how a priest could love someone like her.

The song explores the complexities of love and obsession, specifically in the context of power and religion. Frollo, as a priest, should not be feeling lustful towards Esmeralda, but he cannot help himself. His love is not an altruistic one, but rather one of possession and control. Esmeralda, on the other hand, is confused by Frollo's feelings towards her as she has done nothing to warrant them. The power dynamic between them is obvious; Frollo has the power to condemn her to death, while Esmeralda has none.

Thought it was time to give the vinyl treatment to the old upload here 😊

Such a great classic from Mirco de Govia (Mirko Zetti) which I always remember being a firm fave of Paul van Dyk's back in the day. This one also featured on his legendary TPOD compilation.
