This one is Mishka Frith.… Read Full Bio ↴There is more than one band called Mishka.
This one is Mishka Frith. Like his older sister, singer/songwriter Heather Nova (born Heather Frith), pop-reggae singer Mishka grew up at sea, traveling from island to island in the West Indies on his Canadian mother and Bermudian father's sailboat, where he received most of his education and listened to whatever music he could. When his parents returned to Canada, he completed school and returned to the Caribbean, eventually becoming a competitive windsurfer and representing Bermuda at international meets. In the meantime, he had also taken up songwriting, and he chanced to meet and impress Creation Records head Alan McGee with his vocal ability in late 1996; with prodding from Nova, Mishka was signed to a record contract the following year. His eponymous debut album, a mix of pop, reggae, soul, and singer/songwriter folk-rock, was released in 1999.
The other Mishka is from Ireland, currently living in America. Fronted by Lauren Norton. They have one EP - 47 Varieties Of Hindsight. Myspace: www.myspace.com/mihskamusik
Shadow in the shade
Mishka Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The night sky ever displayed
But in the early morning light,
You started to fade
You had a revolutionary vision
Of breaking down the barricades
But because you lacked the wisdom,
Wise men gave their counsel,
But the truth you did evade
You never heeded any of them
You were the renegade
You thought you were the biggest alligator
That ever cruised the everglades
But oh, now, you’re just a shadow in the shade
So you left your small bowl far behind,
But now you wish that you had stayed
The big fish in this ocean
Have got you feelin' so afraid
Still you climbed on up the ladder
You thought you had it made,
But your confidence was shattered
By the song that a dreamer played
Your hand full of bloody diamonds
And your heart full of clubs and spades
You gambled with poor people’s lives
Now through your conscience you must pay
Dogs barked their warnings
And even donkeys brayed
Oh, now, you’re just a shadow in the shade
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But it’s you they’ll be looking for in the heat of the day
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But it’s you they’ll be looking for in the heat of the day
Then you had a little revelation
So you went on your crusade
But you were preaching to the converted
There was no one to persuade
Like the fool that struts and frets
He’s out upon the stage
You gave your best performance
But no one follows your parade
To be back where you were
Now you’d give it all, your gold, your purse, your jade
But nobody wants to take that fall
There is no one willing to trade
Little children see right through you
They know it’s all a charade
Oh man, you’re just a shadow in the shade
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But it’s you they’ll be looking for in the heat of the day
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But it’s you they’ll be looking for in the heat of the day
Well you got your wake-up call
But it was a little too late
You thought you had handle on it all
When you were holding on the blade
Even so you just kept on working
Trying to earn an honest wage
But there is the price of everything
On the day that you got paid
When at last salvation found you
So worn out and dismayed
She was the image of perfection
In the sunlight well arrayed
She came dancing through the afternoon
You tried to reach out and touch her braids
But oh, man, you’re just a shadow in the shade
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But it’s you they’ll be looking for in the heat of the day
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But it’s you they’ll be looking for in the heat of the day
Oh, oh, oh, oh you’re just a shadow in the shade
But you’ll return tonight at the end of the day
The song "Shadow in the Shade" by Mishka is about a person who once had great potential and vision but failed to fulfill it due to their lack of wisdom and reluctance to heed the advice of wise men. The person believed they were invincible and thought they could do everything on their own. However, their arrogance led them to gamble with people's lives, and they ended up losing everything, including their reputation and credibility.
The chorus "oh, man, you’re just a shadow in the shade" highlights the idea that the person is now a mere shadow of their former self, and their once-bright star has dimmed. They try to regain their lost reputation by going on a crusade, but in the end, they fail to convince anyone as they are only "preaching to the converted," and no one wants to follow their lead.
In the end, the person receives a "wake-up call" too late and realizes that they have lost everything. Salvation finds them, but they are too weary and dispirited to reach out and embrace it. The song ends with the line, "But you'll return tonight at the end of the day," suggesting that the person still has some hope left and might try to resurrect their vision again.
Overall, the song is a cautionary tale about the dangers of arrogance and the importance of heeding advice from others.
