Nobody Cares For Me
Mississippi John Hurt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Chorus:]
Lonesome is I, wished I could die
Nobody cares for me
Lonesome is I, wished I could die
Nobody cares for me

It was a bright moon-lighted night, the moon shining bright,
When you and I made love
Your love wasn't true, I'll say onto you,
I moaned like a turtle dove

[Chorus]

I'm coming home, no more to roam,
Darling I'm coming home
I'm coming home, no more to roam,
Darling I'm coming home

[Chorus]

It was a bright moon-lighted night, the moon shining bright,
When you and I made love

Your love wasn't true, I'll say onto you,
I moaned like a turtle dove

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Nobody Cares for Me" by Mississippi John Hurt are a poignant reflection on loneliness and unrequited love. The singer of the song describes himself as lonesome and wishes for death because he feels that nobody cares for him. The chorus is a powerful repetition of this sentiment that drives home the intensity of his pain.

The verses tell the story of a past love affair that was not genuine or lasting. The singer remembers a moonlit night when he was intimate with his lover, but he acknowledges that her love was not true. He even compares the way he moaned during their encounter to the plaintive sounds of a turtle dove, underscoring his vulnerability and heartache.

The final verse provides a glimmer of hope, as the singer declares that he is coming home and will no longer wander aimlessly. While the chorus still emphasizes his lonesomeness, this line suggests that he is taking steps to heal and find a supportive community. Overall, the song is a moving testament to the resilience of the human spirit, even in times of immense emotional pain.

I was privileged to see the profound MJH at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in (I think) 1964.  He is the master of double thumbing (though it is not pronounced on this version).  Back in the "olden days", I had several of his albums...  Love 'em.

Makes you wanna have a beer out in the sun, sitting on a bench, watching ppl pass by... The lyrics say one thing, but the guitar adds another feeling. Kinda like an "Oh, well" shrug.. That's the genious of it.

Laura

Stavros Dimitriou well, it's like the guitar is sunlight, always shining there for us.

MJH was a legend,so sad hearing him at this late stage in his life, especially the wheezing at the beginning of the track but its a testiment to his vigour to do what he loved..play those old country blues!Great stuff,he and Elizabeth Cotton were true masters of the original country blues.

robert crosier

It is a song I can relate too. However due to my mental disorder ran all of my friends away. So yes no cares for me at all. I do know that God does and It helps at times. I need to work on myself before having someone care for me.
