Elliott is one of the first female hip hop superstars, known for a long series of hits including "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)", "Hit 'Em Wit Da Hee", "Get Ur Freak On", "One Minute Man", "Work It", and "Lose Control". In addition she has received recognition as one of the most successful songwriters of the modern music era, having crafted a number of hit records for artists such as Aaliyah, 702, Total, Ciara, Nicole Wray and Tweet, often with production-partner and childhood friend Timbaland. She was the third female rapper to ever go Platinum, behind Lil' Kim and Da Brat.
Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, she began her career in the all-girl R&B group, Sista in 1993. Eventually, the band folded and Elliott began her career as a solo rapper. Since the early 1990's, Elliott has won six Grammys, recently scoring one for her video of "Lose Control."
Other releases are 'Teary Eyed' and 'We Run This', and the last of these two songs will be the main single of the new greatest hits album titled 'Respect M.E.: Best Of' featuring 17 tracks from her six albums.

Telling how my man been dogging me
My best friend say
Don't tell her nothing 'bout me and you
'Cause she ain't showing me no sympathy
My best friend say
If she was me she'da let you go long long time ago
My best friend say

I'll be there
I'll still be there for you
In your time of need (time of need)
You can lean on me
Come on (come on)

The song "Best Friends" by Missy Elliott is about a relationship between two best friends, where one friend is going through a tough time in her romantic relationship, and the other friend is there to support her through it. The first verse starts off with the idea that the first friend is tired of the second friend crying over the phone about her partner's bad behavior. The second friend understands this and decides not to mention anything about her own romantic relationship as she knows the first friend's capacity for empathy is limited. The chorus of the song emphasizes the theme of being there for each other in a time of need. The second verse focuses more on the protective side of having a best friend who has your best interest in mind. The first friend tells the second friend that she can stay at her house anytime and that she needs to leave her partner as he has not treated her right. In conclusion, the song "Best Friends" celebrates the bond and support system that best friends provide each other.
