MYSTERIOUS
Missy Elliott Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

We started in 1997 and finished in 1999
Haha, she brought you "The Rain," "Sock It To Me," "Beep Me 911"
Now it's a new year
Not the year 2G, but the year 3G
She's a bitch, hahaha
Definitely the bitch to be right about now

That's right, Timbaland, Missy Elliott, bring to you, the future
And I am Morpheus

If you go to your local phone booth
You can find out what I have to say next about the bitch

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are from Missy Elliott's song Mysterious, which was released in 1999. The lyrics reference Missy's previous hits "The Rain", "Sock It To Me", and "Beep Me 911", and suggest that she's about to release a new track called "The Bitch". The opening lines imply that Missy and her producer Timbaland started working on this new music in 1997 and spent two years perfecting it before its release in 1999.

The lyrics also mention the shift from the year 2G to the year 3G, suggesting a futuristic edge to Missy's music. The singer in the lyrics refers to themselves as "Morpheus", a character from The Matrix, and encourages listeners to seek them out via a local phone booth to learn more about "the bitch". The use of this pseudonym, along with the references to time and technology, contribute to a sense of otherworldliness and mystery surrounding Missy and her music.

Overall, the lyrics to "Mysterious" convey Missy Elliott's bold, confident persona as a trailblazing hip-hop artist. The reference to "The Bitch" could be seen as a nod to Missy's reputation as a powerful and outspoken woman in the music industry.

20th Anniversary! Wow. I consider myself super young. I'm only 26 but even I remember this album cover in stores and listening to Missy on the radio.

We were broke growing up but we got gifted stuff from nice people sometimes, so I used to get cassettes, new ones. Most people already moved on to CDs but we had this sound system that was gifted to us and I could use it to record from the radio. I remember my mom not even knowing how the TV worked let alone knowing the shit I did. All I remember is being 8 and waiting until a Missy song came on to hit record and time it perfectly so I could listen to it in the car on my way to school or back home. That cassette had Missy, Eminem, super early 50 Cent (when he just popped off) and other stuff I liked at the time. Chingy, Ludacris, etc. Fun times.
