I Love Me After You
Mitski Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Brushin' my hair naked
Spritz my face with toner
Splash water on my neck
Laughin' in the mirror
Cool water in a glass
Drink it down
How I love me after you
King of all the land

Stride through the house naked
Don't even care that the
Curtains are open
Let the darkness see me
Streets are mine, the night is mine
All my own
How I love me after you

King of all the land
I'm king of all the land

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Mitski's song "I Love Me After You" convey a sense of newfound freedom and self-affirmation after the end of a romantic relationship. The opening lines, "Brushin' my hair naked, Spritz my face with toner, Splash water on my neck, Laughin' in the mirror," depict a moment of self-care and self-admiration. The act of brushing her hair naked symbolizes vulnerability and comfort in her own skin, while the toner and water represent her desire to cleanse and refresh herself. Laughing in the mirror suggests a growing sense of confidence and joy in her own presence.

As the song progresses, Mitski sings, "Stride through the house naked, Don't even care that the Curtains are open, Let the darkness see me." This imagery illustrates her liberation from societal expectations and judgments. She no longer feels the need to hide or conform to norms, embracing her true self unabashedly. The lines "Streets are mine, the night is mine, All my own" further emphasize her newfound sense of ownership and control over her own life. She has become the "king of all the land," reclaiming her power and autonomy.

@vampirisms

This song feels like the perfect song for finding yourself after giving so much of you away to someone else. Absolutely amazing

ā€œStride through the house naked // donā€™t even care that the // curtains are open // let the darkness see me // streets are mine, the night is mineā€ what a beautiful picture this paintsā€¦.. I loved the lyrics in Laurel Hell talking about darkness being something that remembers you and that can see you and you can enter into and that itā€™s being sung about more. Really really lovely song in a bouquet of lovely songs

@comradeniamh7771

really reminds me of hozierā€™s new album too especially ā€˜De Selby Part 1ā€™, this idea of letting the darkness in and being with it

@@comradeniamh7771Hozier x Mitski Nation letā€™s go

@graaceie

It also reminds me of ā€œBlue Lightā€ about dancing in the night naked, this feels like a bittersweet, independent goodbye to that joy.

@edmndw

It's not the first time it's been brought up, like in Drunk Walk Home with "See the dark, it moves"

blue lightā€™s healthy younger sibling

IN ALL SERIOUSNESS THOUGH i am glad this is the final track of the album, i think this album had the best organization and the best opening and closing tracks. ā€œking of all the landā€ in reference to the album title, ā€œthe land is inhospitable and so are weā€. a song of hope, self-love, and freedom, realizing that being alone can sometimes be better for you. seeing a closing track that is so hopeful compared to the mournful pearl diver, the anguished class of 2013, the apathetic last words of a shooting star, the tired a burning hill, the melancholic two slow dancers, and the uncertain thatā€™s our lamp is so sweet in my eyes. this album feels so healthy i love it. please take care of yourself, everyone who listening to this album ā¤ we are the kings and queens of our own lands!
