My Body
Mitski Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm not doing anything
My body's made of crushed little stars
And I'm not doing anything
I wanna see the whole world
I wanna see the whole world
I don't know how I'm gonna pay rent
Would you kill me, Jerusalem
Kill me, Jerusalem
Kill me, Jerusalem
Come find me
I better ace that interview
I better ace that interview
I should tell them that I'm not afraid to die
I better ace that interview
Uh
I work better under a deadline
I work better under a deadline
I pick an age when I'm gonna disappear
Until then I can try again
Until then I can try again
Kill me, Jerusalem
Kill me, Jerusalem
Kill me, Jerusalem
Go and kill me
The opening lyrics of "My Body's Made of Crushed Little Stars" by Mitski, "I'm not doing anything...My body's made of crushed little stars," set the tone for the song's overall feeling of emptiness and aimlessness. The repetition of the phrase "I'm not doing anything" emphasizes the singer's lack of drive or motivation to do anything productive. They seem to be stuck in a state of limbo, feeling insignificant and disconnected from the world around them. The imagery of the body made of "crushed little stars" adds to the sense of fragility and smallness.
Despite feeling lost and directionless, the singer still has a desire to explore and experience the world. The lines "I wanna see the whole world...I don't know how I'm gonna pay rent" illustrate the struggle between a desire for adventure and the practical concerns of everyday life. The mention of Jerusalem adds an element of religious and cultural significance, as the city holds importance for Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike. The repeated plea for Jerusalem to "kill" them could symbolize a desire for release or salvation from the burdens of existence.
