My Love Is All Mine
Mitski Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Moon, a hole of light
Through the big top tent up high
Here before and after me
Shinin' down on me
Moon, tell me if I could
Send up my heart to you?
So, when I die, which I must do
Could it shine down here with you?

'Cause my love is mine, all mine
I love, my, my, mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine, all mine, all mine

My baby, here on earth
Showed me what my heart was worth
So, when it comes to be my turn
Could you shine it down here for her?

'Cause my love is mine, all mine
I love, my, my, mine
Nothing in the world belongs to me
But my love, mine, all mine

Nothing in the world is mine for free
But my love, mine, all mine, all mine

Overall Meaning

In Mitski's song "My Love is mine all mine," the lyrics evoke a sense of longing, connection, and the understanding of one's personal love. The song begins by addressing the moon as a hole of light, positioned above the big top tent. The moon represents a constant presence, existing before and after the singer's time. With a desire to reach out to the moon, the singer questions if they could send up their heart when they pass away, hoping that it could shine down alongside the moon.

The chorus emphasizes the singer's love, proclaiming that it is solely theirs and no one else's. It highlights a possessive yet intimate connection to their love. In the second verse, the singer acknowledges a significant person in their life, referred to as "my baby." This person has shown the singer the value and worth of their heart. As the singer reflects on their mortality, they ask if the moon could shine their love down to this person when it becomes their turn to part from this world.

The repetition of the chorus reinforces the idea of personal ownership over one's love, acknowledging that nothing else in the world belongs to them, but their love is truly and completely theirs.

@akistrapon

thank you mitski.

you’ve unknowingly saved my life when i was twelve in 2020. i was extremely suicidal at the time because of my abusive upbringing (along with the whole pandemic situation) and one of your older songs started suddenly playing in a shuffle of ‘goodbye music’ i put together that summer, since i was planning to commit beforehand. i don’t think there was much else to ease me out of it either now that i reminisce on that period of my childhood. i was at a peak where i couldn’t even talk myself out of doing something permanent and that fact terrified me looking back on it.

i haven’t ever cried my eyes out the way i did listening to your music for the first time. i wish i was able to verbalize the amount of ‘it’ll be okay’ energy that it just radiated altogether, how much i felt like i was actually alright, as if five minutes ago i wasn’t just considering ending my life.

i ended up deleting that playlist i planned out of course, learned to take care of myself more and eventually i started listening to her own songs as a form of comfort whenever i do reach that mental point.

i’m turning sixteen this december though, doing far better in terms of my mental health and i undoubtedly fell in love with her music all over again w this album. for those reading i hope mitski’s songs help u throughout what ur going thru as much as it’s helping me — it will get better. trust me. ^_^
