In the first verse, the narrator speaks of going to a party on her knees and saying "Take it all, please". This could be a metaphor for surrendering to the night and doing things that may not be good for her. The repetition of "tell me no" in the chorus could suggest a plea for someone to tell her to stop, to save herself from her own destructive behavior.
The second verse seems to reinforce the idea that the narrator is not in a state of happiness or sadness, just moving through life feeling up or down and always bad. The notion of feeling bad may suggest that the narrator is dealing with some sort of emotional pain that she is trying to escape from.
The bridge repeats the refrain of "tell me no", and the outro is made up of nonsensical syllables that could suggest the feeling of being lost and disconnected from reality.
Overall, the song seems to be a commentary on the complex emotions and desires that can come with the search for self-discovery and fulfillment, even if it means making unhealthy choices.
Thursday Girl
Mitski Lyrics

As I go to the party on my knees
Saying take it all please
And tell me no
Tell me no, tell me no
Tell me no
Somebody please
Tell me no
Tell me no
Glory, glory, glory to the night
It shows me what I am
I'm not happy or sad, just up or down
And always bad
And tell me no
Tell me no, tell me no
Tell me no
Somebody please
Tell me no, tell me no
Tell me no
Tell me no
Somebody here
Tell me no, tell me no
Tell me no
Tell me no
The lyrics to Mitski's song "Thursday Girl" speak to the complexities of the singer's emotional state as she navigates a night out. The repetition of "glory, glory, glory" suggests that she might be seeking solace or comfort in the chaos of the night. However, as she attends the party "on [her] knees" and begs someone to "take it all please," it becomes clear that she is struggling emotionally. The repeated refrain of "tell me no, tell me no" suggests that she may be seeking someone to set boundaries for her or help her avoid making bad decisions. Ultimately, her emotional state is described as "not happy or sad, just up or down and always bad," implying that while the night may have shown her an unflattering mirror to her inner life, she has not yet found resolution.
One interpretation of the song is that it speaks to the experience of struggling with addiction or unhealthy coping mechanisms. The singer's plea to be told "no" reflects a desire for someone to help her avoid self-destructive behavior. Similarly, the lyrics emphasizing that she is "not happy or sad" but always bad suggests that she may be stuck in a cycle of negative emotions and self-harm. However, the song ends on an ambiguous note—while the title suggests that the singer is a "Thursday girl," a nickname given to someone who is only interested in partying one day of the week, there is no clear sense of what happens after the night ends. The repetition of "tell me no" could suggest that she does not find the resolution she is looking for, or it could imply that she finally finds someone to help guide her.

For me, this song is about unhealthy coping mechanisms, but you know they are unhealthy, and you want to stop, you want someone to stop you from hurting yourself over and over again, whether that someone is you or another person. And i couldnt relate more

For me, this song is about self harm. Specifically the feeling you get when you’re done. The guilt that comes after it, and the feeling you get when someone finds out. As someone who has dealt with sh, I vividly remember what happened when my mom saw my scars. The lines “tell me no” especially hit hard. I love mitski all of her songs are way too relatable
