Townie
Mitski Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a party and we're all going
And we're all growing up
Somebody's driving and he will be drinking
And no one's going back
'Cause we've tried hungry and we've tried full
And nothing seems enough
So tonight, tonight
The boys are gonna go for

And I want a love that falls as fast
As a body from the balcony
And I wanna kiss like my heart is hitting the ground
I'm holding my breath with a baseball bat
Though I don't know what I'm waiting for
I am not gonna be what my daddy wants me to be

Smell that, it's wet grass, and smoke in my hair
I think I've had enough
But he wants a finale and I came prepared
And we're not going back
And I've tried sharing and I've tried caring
And I've tried putting out
But the boys, boys, boys keep coming on for
More, more, more
And change change change is gonna come, but
When, when, when?

And I want a love that falls as fast
As a body from the balcony
And I wanna kiss like my heart is hitting the ground
I'm holding my breath with a baseball bat
Though I don't know what I'm waiting for
I am not gonna be what my daddy wants me to be

And I want a love that falls as fast
As a body from the balcony
And I wanna kiss like my heart is hitting the ground
I'm holding my breath with a baseball bat
Though I don't know what I'm waiting for
I am not gonna be what my daddy wants me to be

I'm not gonna be what my daddy wants me to be
I wanna be what my body wants me to be

Overall Meaning

The song "Townie" by Mitski is about a group of friends who are going to a party and are trying to escape the mundane routine of life. Mitski sings about the desire for more - a greater sense of fulfillment and satisfaction. She wants a love that is intense, that falls as fast as a body from a balcony. She's waiting for something that she can't describe, but is determined not to conform to her father's expectations.

Mitski describes the atmosphere of the party where she smells wet grass and smoke in her hair. She's uncertain about whether she's had enough, but her friends are pushing her to stay. Mitski has tried caring and sharing, but she's not finding what she wants. She's holding her breath with a baseball bat, ready for whatever comes next. She knows that change is coming, but she doesn't know when. The song ends with Mitski reiterating her desire for a love that is passionate and all-encompassing.

Overall, "Townie" is a song about yearning for something more, something that is visceral and intense. Mitski's vocals and lyrics capture the feeling of wanting to escape and the uncertainty that comes with that desire.

This song really hits me. I relate so deeply to wanting an intense destructive love, turning to teen rebellion and misbehave in a very self destructive way to try in fill the empty and make sense of things. Now more than ever, I feel like i want to do so many things, and I can't help but feeling like I'm wasting my own youth sitting at home not experiencing all of the things I wish I was experiencing.

@capricorncom878

wow same i want to do so many things and live but im just sitting at home deteriorating
