Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

Where I can lay my heavy burden down
Oh beautiful scene in decay
There to remind us that nothing stays the same
If this be my last night on earth
Let me remember this for all that its worth
If this be my last night on earth
Wild fruit, sands, override on the vine
Wild creatures come gather round to suckle their wine
The birds they feed before they take flight
As the weary sun succumbs to their heavy eyelids that is life
If this be my last night on earth
Let me remember this for all that its worth
If this be my last night on earth
Let me remember this for all that its worth
Intoxicated birds glide in a swarm
They sing to me their drunken tunes
This is your last night on earth
Remember us for all that we were
Take sweet memories with you, with you
And plant those seeds somewhere new
This is your last night on earth
Remember us for all that we were
Take sweet memories with you, with you
And plant those seeds somewhere new
In Moby's song "Last Night," the artist provides a reflection on the transience of life and the beauty that can be found in decay. The first verse suggests a longing for a peaceful place to lay down one's burdens, where the presence of decay is a reminder that nothing in life stays the same. The subsequent verse describes a scene of wildness, of "wild fruit" and "wild creatures," and notes the interplay of life and death in the exchange between birds and the sun. These lyrics suggest a reverence for the natural world and a recognition of the inevitability of change.
The chorus reflects on what this night might mean if it were one's last. The artist pleas for the night to be remembered and savoured, as something beautiful and full of meaning. The final passage describes a surreal encounter with "intoxicated birds" who sing drunken songs, and who urge the listener to remember their beauty and to "plant those seeds somewhere new." These lyrics can be interpreted as a call to appreciate the present moment and to preserve the beauty of the natural world for future generations.
