Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

Don't Love Me
Moby Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so cruel
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so cruel
Treat me like a lowdown stupid fool
Was letting go
I sing this song
And now it's over
Call off the line
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so bad
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so bad
Treat me like the worst thing you ever had
Treat me like the worst thing you ever had
I'm so alone
Like when I die
Just so sad
I cry, I cry
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
Oh sweetness
My love and more
Please don't go
Oh please don't go
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
Treat me like the worst thing you ever seen
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean

I know you don't love me but you don't have to be so mean
Moby's song "Don't Love Me" seems to be about a relationship that has ended, with the singer acknowledging that their former love interest does not feel the same way anymore. The lyrics express a sense of hurt and frustration with how the other person is treating them. The first verse acknowledges that the person doesn't love them but doesn't have to be cruel or mean. They ask them to treat them kindly even though they're no longer together. The second verse expresses a sense of feeling stupid and lowdown as the other person treats them badly. The chorus repeats several times, emphasizing the pain caused by the other person's treatment.
The verse "Was letting go/I sing this song/And now it's over/Call off the line" could be interpreted as the singer letting go of the relationship and moving on. Music can be therapeutic, so he sings this song as a way of expressing his pain and letting go of the hurt. The final lines "Oh sweetness/My love and more/Please don't go/Oh please don't go" express a final plea to the former lover to reconsider leaving and to stay with the singer.
Overall, the song seems to be about the pain of losing a relationship and feeling mistreated by the former lover. It speaks to the emotions of heartbreak and the desire for kindness and love, even in the aftermath of a breakup.
