Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

Jam for the Ladies
Moby Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
One things for sure
Well we got soul
It's a jam for the ladies and the superstars
I could leave the whole set but never go too far
If you're from where-ever to where-ever you are
Get yer jam, get it on
Superstar
If you're from where-ever to where-ever you are
(MC Lyte, would you put it right)
Everybody moves
I paid my dues
You pick and choose
I stick and move
Yes yes y'all
It ain't gonna stop
The ladies
Keep rippin' the spot
Now men what you heard
'Cause women are comin' up
Keepin' it raw
Sexy and rough
Fly from the top
To the bottom it's gonna be
Cut 'em, gut 'em, we got 'em
It's like the old leagues
It's a jam for the ladies and the superstars
I could leave the whole set but never go too far
(Do it superstar)
(Jam on, jam on)
If you're from where-ever to where-ever you are
(MC Lyte, do it right)
You know I can't stand to be held back (it's so fly)
And all the ladies y'all got my back yeah
Even when we're solo in action
We come together like six sets of jacksons
For the ladies and a superstar
Lyte leave the set but never go too far
I toured the world but i'm rollin' it now
Don't want my girl to brag, eve was holdin' it down
Jam for the ladies, we putting it down
Snatchin' the crown 'cause we fend for high ground
It's a jam for the ladies and the superstars
I could leave the whole set but never go too far
(Jam for the ladies)
(Do it superstar)
In “Jam for the Ladies”, Moby collaborates with MC Lyte and Angie Stone to create a track that celebrates women in the music industry. The song opens with a declaration that the trio has soul, and sets the tone for a jam that’s meant for both women and superstars. The chorus reiterates this sentiment, inviting anyone from “wherever to wherever” to join in on the jam. The verses are led by MC Lyte, who delivers a confident and empowering message aimed at her female audience. She raps about “keepin' it raw, sexy, and rough” while “ripping the spot”. She challenges men to recognize that women are on the come up, and that they are a force to be reckoned with. She encourages women to band together, invoking the image of “six sets of Jacksons” to suggest the power of unity.
The chorus repeats one last time, and the song closes out. “Jam for the Ladies” is a feel-good track that encourages listeners to dance and celebrate, but it’s also an important statement about the role of women in the music industry. MC Lyte, Angie Stone, and Moby use their platform to recognize and uplift women, and to challenge societal barriers that might hold them back.
