Machete
Moby Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yesterday I felt so cold I felt like I could die
Took the needles from my arms and put them to the sky
Watched the cold come take me pull me down like I did know
I saw it gone

Hold myself up til tomorrow holds me down again
Feel the darkness coming over see how it begins
Come with me into the willow garden out tonight
Feel the darkness come my moon will touch you with its light

Help me life was over love I want to had you in my sights
See and I was overlooked I had you in my hands

Like a lid of no survivors nothing I don't mind
Help me broken baby help me break you with my mind.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Moby’s song “Machete” are mysterious and haunting, bringing a sense of darkness and desperation. The opening lines describe the feeling of being so cold and helpless that death seems imminent. The singer is in a dark place, struggling with addiction and depression, and contemplating suicide. However, there is also a glimmer of hope and redemption, as the singer puts the needles aside and looks up to the sky.

The next verse talks about the darkness coming over and how it begins, hinting at the troubles and challenges that the singer is facing in life. The mention of the willow garden adds to the poetic imagery and the sense of foreboding. The moon, another symbol of light and hope, is said to touch the singer with its light, hinting at the possibility of salvation and spiritual transformation.

The final lines of the song are the most disturbing, as the singer seems to be asking for help but also threatening to harm others. The theme of brokenness is prominent throughout the song, with the singer feeling broken and wanting to break others with his mind.

Overall, “Machete” is a deeply existential and introspective song, exploring themes of mortality, addiction, and mental illness. It is a song that invites listeners to reflect on their own struggles and find hope and strength in their darkest moments.

Under appreciated? This album was MASSIVE! Heard it in every pub, in every restaurant and played at every party, everyone had it and played it to death This album was not under appreciated. It went on to become the greatest selling album of all time.

@juggernautproduktion

dandy weasle haha I know right. Don’t know where you are bro but I’m in Australia and definitely agree. I was 12 when this came out and ALL radio stations played it. Cars driving past. Music video programs at the time. Parties in my teens. Movies. Fuck the list just goes on hey. And still, one of the best albums ever. I’m a massive metal head and extreme music fan, but this is timeless. Peace

@seungminwhatisyourproblem

Lmao it's not the greatest selling album of all time get your facts straight.

@j.d.714

It depends on region. Growing up in the US, 18 ended up more popular than Play. I did get to hear Porcelain on the radio once and saw the video for South Side once but that was it.
