Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

At first glance, the lyrics to Moby’s song Next Is the E may seem simplistic and repetitive. However, upon closer inspection, the lyrics suggest a certain level of euphoria that is common to those who have taken the drug Ecstasy. “Next is the E” is a reference to Ecstasy’s active ingredient, MDMA, which is also known as “E.” The repetition of this phrase throughout the song seems to suggest the anticipation of the drug’s effects, as well as the euphoria that follows.
The phrases “I feel it yeah” and “Oh my god, I want to be with you” are also common to those who have taken Ecstasy. The drug creates a sense of emotional openness and intimacy, as well as a heightened sense of touch and physical sensation. The line “Oh my god, I want to be with you” suggests a sense of desire and attraction that is often intensified while on the drug.
The chorus of the song, which repeats the phrase “Next is the E,” seems to mimic the repetitive beats of electronic dance music (EDM) that is often associated with the use of Ecstasy. The song’s fast-paced beat and repetitive lyrics suggest a certain level of urgency and excitement, further emphasizing the anticipation of the drug’s effects.
While the song’s lyrics may seem innocuous to some, they are actually quite controversial. Some have criticized Moby for promoting drug use through his music, while others have praised the song for its honest portrayal of the Ecstasy experience. Regardless of one’s stance on the issue, it is clear that Next Is the E is a powerful and evocative song that speaks to a very specific cultural phenomenon.
