Moby found commercial and critical success with his fifth album Play (1999), which, after receiving little recognition, became an unexpected global hit in 2000 after each track was licensed to films, television shows, and commercials. It remains his highest selling album with 12 million copies sold. Its seventh single, "South Side", featuring Gwen Stefani, remains his only one to appear on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching No. 14. Moby followed Play with albums of varied styles including electronic, dance, rock, and downtempo music, starting with 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), and Last Night (2008). His later albums saw him explore ambient music, including the almost four-hour release Long Ambients 1: Calm. Sleep. (2016). Moby continues to record and release albums; his twenty-first studio album, Resound NYC, was released in May 2023.
In addition to his music career, Moby is known for his veganism and support for animal rights and humanitarian aid. He was the owner of TeaNY, a vegan cafe in Manhattan, and Little Pine, a vegan restaurant in Los Angeles, and organized the vegan music and food festival Circle V. He is the author of four books, including a collection of his photography and two memoirs: Porcelain: A Memoir (2016) and Then It Fell Apart (2019).

Moby Lyrics

Then I wake it's kaleidoscopic mind
I never meant to hurt you
I never meant to lie
So this is goodbye
This is goodbye
Tell the truth you never wanted me
Tell me
In my dreams, I'm jealous all the time
Then I wake I'm going out of my mind
Going out of my mind
The opening lines of Moby's song 'This is Goodbye' paint a picture of a person experiencing some intense emotions in their dreams. They dream of dying, but then they wake up to a kaleidoscopic mind, which could imply that their thoughts and emotions are all jumbled up and varied. Perhaps they are struggling with some inner turmoil, and can't fully make sense of it, even in their dreams. As the song progresses, the lyrics turn to the theme of a relationship and the hurt that has been caused. The person singing never meant to hurt or lie to their partner, but it seems that it's too late to fix things. This is where 'this is goodbye' comes in- the relationship is over and there's no going back. The lines 'tell the truth, you never wanted me, tell me' could suggest that perhaps their partner never really cared for them as much as they thought, or that the breakup was coming regardless of any actions they took.
The second verse continues the theme of intense emotions, this time with jealousy being the focus. The person singing is consumed by it in their dreams, and when they wake up, they feel like they're losing their grip on reality. It's unclear whether this jealousy is related to the relationship they are leaving behind or some other aspect of their life. The song ends with the repetition of 'going out of my mind', emphasizing the struggle within the person's psyche.
