Overall Meaning

Moby's song Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? seems to be about a person who is struggling emotionally and spiritually. The repeated question, "Why does my heart feel so bad? Why does my soul feel so bad?" suggests that the person is in a state of confusion and questioning why they are feeling so down. The chorus of "He'll open doors" is a ray of hope, with the promise that there is someone or something out there that can help alleviate the pain.

One interpretation of the lyrics is that the person is seeking a spiritual or religious solution to their problems. The repetition of "He'll open doors" could refer to the idea that someone is waiting to welcome them with open arms, whether that be a higher power or an individual who can provide guidance and support. At the same time, the person seems to be struggling with doubt, asking why they are feeling so bad if there is indeed some sort of divine force that can help them.

Another interpretation is that the person is unhappy with their current situation and is looking for a way out. The repeated "He'll open doors" could refer to the idea that opportunities are out there, waiting to be taken. However, the person is struggling to find the motivation or direction to make a change, leading to feelings of confusion and despair.

Overall, the lyrics of Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad? capture the complexities of emotional turmoil and the search for meaning and hope during difficult times.

“grief is a house
where the chairs
have forgotten how to hold us
the mirrors how to reflect us
the walls how to contain us

grief is a house that disappears
each time someone knocks at the door
or rings the bell
a house that blows into the air
at the slightest gust
that buries itself deep in the ground
while everyone is sleeping

grief is a house where no one can protect you
where the younger sister
will grow older than the older one
where the doors
no longer let you in
or out” ― Jandy Nelson, The Sky Is Everywhere

My dog Mojo, who I raised from a puppy and was my companion in life, my best friend, started having seizures at age 6. I took him to several vets who said he may have epilepsy, but his conditioned worsened and we had a cat scan done. I received the heartbreaking news that he had a large brain tumor and severe swelling and he would not be able to be saved. I played this song so loud it blew my speakers and cried like I have never cried before in my life.

I felt that same way about my daughter's boyfriend when he passed away suddenly at age 31. To this day I can hardly speak about him without tearing up. I see him in my dreams. He talks to me. I miss him so.
