Canto Di Natale
Modena City Ramblers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The opening verse of Modena City Ramblers' "Canto di Natale" speaks to a woman of the dark alleys who wears a tattered coat. She is encouraged to dry her tears and put on a smile because Christmas is around the corner. Though the air may be heavy with something strange and cries fill the air, even the old, worn walls of the alleys shine under the moonlight. The lyrics evoke the contrast between the harshness of the alleyways and the festive mood of the season.
The following verse reminisces about a chance meeting between the singer and the woman, which occurred on a cold and snowy day. They danced a waltz and enjoyed a drink of scura. Scura is a type of drink that is still popular in Northern Italy; made with coffee, sugar, and grappa or brandy, it is often served as a digestif or an after-dinner drink. The chorus repeats the refrain of "with many greetings to another Christmas" and encourages the woman to forget her problems and enjoy the holiday season.
Overall, the song speaks to the struggle of poverty and difficulty that can exist in the harsh corners of the world, but ultimately encourages celebrating the good in life's moments, such as Christmas. It is a song that recognizes the problems and pain that exist in the world, but still highlights the beauty of life and the enjoyment that can come from simple pleasures.
