The Modern Jazz Quartet was formed in 1952 by Milt Jackson (vibraphone), Jo… Read Full Bio ↴The Modern Jazz Quartet was formed in 1952 by Milt Jackson (vibraphone), John Lewis (piano, musical director), Percy Heath (bass), and Kenny Clarke (drums). Connie Kay replaced Clarke in 1955. Various of the members had played together backing other artists such as Dizzy Gillespie and Ray Brown, and in Jackson's own Quartet.

Through their long existence, they have worked with Classical musicians and are known for incorporating elements of Classical music into jazz, being one of the most notable examples of the style called Third Stream.

The group disbanded in 1974 and reformed in 1981 on a part-time basis, with their last new recording issued in 1993.

John Lewis (along with McCoy Tyner) is one of my two top favorite jazz pianists and Lewis had timing better than most and the equal of anyone; perhaps nobody could excel Brubeck in that regard but Lewis did it in his own style and I never tire of listening to him. And the others too of course.

I never realized that the first 13 seconds, which sounds so much like Bach (whose music John Lewis adored and loved to play and play with), IS almost 100% by Bach. It's one of the brief accompanied canons from his late work "The Musical Offering" (I saw "almost" because Percy Health doesn't quite stick to Bach's bass theme). The Wikipedia article on "The Musical Offering" points to this performance (and user kebabroyal also makes the point, in another comment on this page).

@Wolf Dancer Sorry folks, we are getting way off topic here. But no, sorry, Gary Brooker didn't even write the organ part of WSoP; organist Matthew Fisher was "inspired by" Bach but it's not at all a borrowing of Bach. See http://web.archive.org/web/20010616224827/http://www.bachfaq.org/awsopafg.html. Beethoven's 9th symphony is an hour long and has 4 measures that are almost the same as an unimpressive sequence in an obscure Mozart piece (probably a coincidence). And B was sent folksongs to arrange for a fee, but he didn't copy them for his own works.

People do borrow and often by accident but Gary Brooker of Procol Harum is the one who said he copied the theme for Whiter Shade Of Pale, he freely admits it and this is on film from an interview. Also it is well known that Beethoven copied folk tunes and it is argued his 9th Symphony copies from Mozart. Who probably copied it himself.

@Wolf Dancer I don't want to be too pedantic, but I can't help it. People DO borrow bits of music and they do pay homage to other genres, BUT I don't think Beethoven borrowed any German folk tunes for either the 9th or 5th symphonies. And "Whiter Shade of Pale" is not any piece by Bach, it just is Bach-like -- especially similar to the (so-called) Air on G String -- not to mention it sounds a lot like "When A Man Loves A Woman". But I agree with you, "Hats off to the great John Lewis!" He includes an entire (but tiny) very complex piece by Bach here for 13 seconds.

Beethoven borrowed from German folk tunes and in fact his most famous symphony is an example. "Whiter Shade Of Pale" is also Bach or some classical passage and Brooker acknowledges that. Hats off to the great John Lewis.

With all due respect (maybe because I'm in fond of the vibraphone) I don't think there is an "early" period for the MJQ. I bought almost all of their records (vinyl & CDs),and I' m glad I did it. Money well spent.
