Here It Comes
Modest Mouse Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Walk to your house on my lunch break
Here it comes
Come inside and pour a drink
You'll probably tell me everything you think

Here it comes
The place and the time that we knew
that things could go wrong
The grass grows green
could you step away from the screen
it doesn't mean
I don't want you to be seen
just not like everyone.

Grass grows green and it's just everyone.
You always told me life's a dam that breaks, well
Here it comes
If you sit still or if you run
Here it comes.

So now we're drownin' in birthday cakes
Here it comes
The place and the time that we knew that things could go wrong
Keep it clean.

I didn't mean to be mean.
Why does it always seem
Like I've never won.

Keep it clean and no one's ever won.
The empty promise makers said
Here it comes
Make a point to make no sense, well
Here it comes
Speak about the future in the past tense
Here it comes
Don't look down.

So what'd we do?
Here it comes
Walkin' around with shit on our shoes

Oh, here it comes
The place and the time that we knew things would go wrong.

Overall Meaning

The Modest Mouse song "Here It Comes" reflects on the inevitability of life's difficulties and the importance of embracing the present moment. The opening lines suggest a desire to connect with someone during a lunch break, and the lyrics convey a sense of vulnerability and openness as the characters share a drink and their thoughts. The chorus suggests that tough times are coming and that there is nothing that can be done to prevent them, but that it's important to face them head-on. The mention of the grass growing green is symbolic of nature's cyclical nature and the idea that things will continue to change and grow regardless of our efforts to control them.

The lyrics also touch on themes of human interaction in the digital age, with lines like "could you step away from the screen" and "keep it clean." These lines suggest a desire for a more authentic and personal connection despite the prevalence of technology in our lives. The chorus repeats the phrase "here it comes" to emphasize the inevitability of life's challenges and to encourage listeners to embrace the present moment.

I ain’t sleepin’ on it Grateful. Isaac is one of the best lyricists of his generation. He’s like the Eminem of his genre. “Make a point to make no sense”..LOL!

Quick backstory of how I found out about this band. One of my friends used to make some CD mixes where he would take about 10-20 songs and put them on a disc for me and my family to enjoy. He called them There and Back Again Volumes and we would never go on road trips without them. This was the first song I ever heard from them. I think it was on There and Back Again volume 2 or 3 that he put this song in, and that was how I found out about Modest Mouse. This band is just too nostalgic for me to forget.

It feels like a secret. Obscure tune from EP, and the Modest Mouse song most likely to make me air acoustic guitar and lip sync. Glad I found a place where I could admit that.

This songs lyrics commuciates on so many levels across so many ideas in such a beautiful simplistic way the whole thing is an experience in synesthesia. I'll be playing this tonight right before they really start to kick in..."place and the time when things......" HERE IT COMES!!!

MrBillSasquatch

It simply doesn't get any better than this.
