Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya
Mohammed Rafi Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the famous song "Main Zindagi Ka Saath" by Mohammed Rafi speaks of a life philosophy that encourages us to face every moment bravely and with a positive attitude. The singer describes how he has walked along the journey of life, taking everything as it comes and leaving behind all his worries and sorrows in the smoke of his past. He believes that it is pointless to mourn over one's losses as life goes on, and it is better to celebrate every passing moment, good or bad.

The singer understands the concept of fate, and he has learned to accept whatever opportunities life grants him. He chooses to cherish the things he possesses and forget the ones he lost. Above all, he decides to believe in the power of the present and stay focused on creating new memories, instead of dwelling on the past. The song is a reminder that life is a journey, and one must move forward with a positive attitude, taking everything in stride and learning from every experience.

This song has given me comfort through a tough personal situation in life. I recite it like a prayer when I'm worried, or sad.

Some thoughts related to each line:
(Sorry for the long post.)

--------------------------------

Mai zindagi ka saath nibhaata chalaa gaya.
Har fikr ko dhuei mei udaata chala gaya.

WORRY NOT (about irrelevant issues beyond your control).

(Stop resisting the flow of life, because nothing else is in your control beyond your own actions. Even the actions of your own loved ones are not in your control. More than what you do, your life will be determined by other people's actions. So, how you respond to what is done to you is more important than your own actions. Your response to adversity is what will make the difference. All important-sounding worldly issues are ultimately of no relevance to you and there's nothing to be done about them anyway. Do not mistake worrying about irrelevant issues for thinking. So, smoke away your worries and accompany life, for fighting the very thing that keeps you alive is defeating the whole purpose.)

-------------------------------

Barbaadiyo ka shok manaana fizul thha.
Barbaadiyo ka jashn manaata chalaa gaya.

ACCEPT THE SETBACKS. (They're not roadblocks, just diversions.)

(All setbacks are nothing compared to the ultimate end which is inevitable. Life is a journey of pain and pleasure. You want the pleasure not the pain. How can that be? Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional. So, what is even the point of choosing to wallow in your pain like a pig rolls around in its own filth. Accept the losses instead of hiding them. The sooner you do, the quicker you start the process of learning your lessons and healing to move on.)

----------------------------------

Jo mil gaya usiko muqaddar samajh liya.
Jo kho gaya mai usko bhulaata chalaa gaya.

BE GRATEFUL. (And let go of what's not yours.)

(You arrived here with nothing. Why do you feel entitled to having all that you want. The world does not owe anything to, not just you, but anyone else. Whatever little you have received, even temporarily, be grateful for that, because that too is going to go away soon. What you didn't get at all there's no point in regretting it. If it seems like the grass is greener on the other side, all it means is that you're not focusing on your own grass. Water it and you may have even greener grass.
Every moment that passes you, something or the other is getting left behind. If you stop and sit to regret what is left behind, whatever little you have will leave you behind too. Do as much as you can with you have, no questions asked.)

-----------------------------------

Gham aur khushi mei farq naa mehsoos ho jahaan
mai dil ko uss maqaam pe laata chala gaya.

STAY DETACHED (of outcome.)

(Happiness and sadness, Pleasure and pain are two sides of the same coin, just as roses can only come with thorns. In fact, roses will lull you into gullibility; an unprepared shock of reality. Thorns will spur you on more and will toughen you up to life's rigours.
Grieve if you want for a while but do not make the mistake of thinking of it as the end. For when it seems like it's all over, that's a new beginning. When you feel you are dead and buried, you are actually being planted. And don't ever think it won't happen again. You will feel like you've been buried again but you will flower again. It's the circle of life and you are not beyond it. No one is.
You win. Move on. You lose. Move on.
So what awaits me around the next bend of life? I'm ready, because I know I can handle it.)

Sahir Ludhianvi was a genius. Remember his lines before Main pal do pal ka shayar hoon:

Kal nayi kounple footengey,
Kal naye phool muskurayengey,
Aur naye ghass ki nayi farsh par,
Naye paaon ithlaayenge,

Woh mere beech nahi aaye,
Mein unke beech me kyun aaoon,
Unki soobha aur shamona ka,
Mein ek bhi lamha kyon paaoon

Main pal do pal ka shaayar hoon

And he wrote this with Amrita Pritam in mind ...
