In a career spanning about 40 years, Rafi sang over 26,000 film songs. His songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans, and from slow melancholic tunes to fast and melodious fun filled songs. He had a strong command of Hindi and Urdu and a powerful range that could accommodate this variety. He sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Konkani, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, Maghi, Maithili and Assamese. He also recorded a few English, Persian, Spanish and Dutch songs.

शाम फिर क्यों उदास है दोस्त
महकी महकी फ़िज़ा ये कहती है
तू कही आस पास है दोस्त
तू कही आस पास है दोस्त
The lyrics of Mohammed Rafi's song "Tu Kahin Aas Paas Hai Dost" convey a sense of longing for a friend who is not present, and the hope that they may be somewhere nearby. The first line "tere aane ki aas hai dost" expresses the desire for the friend to return, while the second line "shaam phir kyun udas hai dost" suggests that the singer is feeling sad or lonely in their absence.
The third line "mahki mahki fiza ye kehti hai" describes the scented air, which seems to suggest that the friend's presence is somehow felt even though they are not there. The final line "tu kahi aas paas hai dost" reinforces this idea, but also suggests that perhaps the friend is close enough to be reached if the singer were to look hard enough. Overall, the lyrics convey a sense of emotional yearning and the belief that the absent friend is somehow still present in spirit.
