In a career spanning about 40 years, Rafi sang over 26,000 film songs. His songs ranged from classical numbers to patriotic songs, sad lamentations to highly romantic numbers, qawwalis to ghazals and bhajans, and from slow melancholic tunes to fast and melodious fun filled songs. He had a strong command of Hindi and Urdu and a powerful range that could accommodate this variety. He sang in many Indian languages including Hindi, Konkani, Urdu, Bhojpuri, Oriya, Punjabi, Bengali, Marathi, Sindhi, Kannada, Gujarati, Telugu, Maghi, Maithili and Assamese. He also recorded a few English, Persian, Spanish and Dutch songs.

Raat meri hai chhanv tumhaare hi aanchal ki
Tumase kahuun ik baat paron si halki halki halki halki
Soi galiyaan bahpas pasaare aankhen miche
Soi galiyaan bahpas pasaare aankhen miche
Main duniyaa se dur ghani palakon ke niche
Dekhuun chalate kwaab lakiron par kaajal kiTumase kahuun ik baat paron si halki halki halki halki
Dhundhal dhundhali rain milan kaa bistar jaise
Dhundhal dhundhali rain milan kaa bistar jaise
Khulataa chhupataa chaand sej ke upar jaise
Chalati phirati khaat hawaaon par baadal ki
Tumase kahuun ik baat paron si halki halki halki halki
Hai bhigaa saa jism tumhaaraa in haathon men
Hai bhigaa saa jism tumhaaraa in haathon men
Baahar nind bharaa panchhi bhigi shaakhn me
Aur barakhaa ki bund badan se dhalki dhalki
Tumase kahuun ik baat paron si halki halki
Raat meri hai chhanv tumhaare hi aanchal ki
Tumase kahuun ik baat paron si halki halki halki halki.
The lyrics of Mohammed Rafi’s song “Tumse Kahoon Ek Baat” speak about the depth of the poet’s love for his beloved. He says that the night is like a thin veil over him, and it is the one you are holding, referring to his beloved’s veil or dupatta. He is saying that his love is as light as a feather, like a feather that floats in the air. He explains how he wanders the lonely alleys, and his eyes are shut as he is lost deep in thought about his love. He explores the world of his dreams with eyes closed and watching the lines on his palms, which has been darkened by kajal given by his beloved.
In the next stanza, he talks about how the night of their meeting is hazy and dreamlike. The moon appears to be hiding behind the clouds, much like their love stays hidden from the world. The bed of their love is soft and comfortable, just like a cloud passing over a moonlit sky. He also talks about the winds carrying their messages, and the clouds carrying their dreams, watching them as they float away, moving like ships on the wind.
The last stanza speaks about the sensations he feels when holding his beloved. He describes her body as moist, wet with perspiration or perhaps rain. Her hand is warm, and her body is like a wet branch. He shares a feeling of calmness and tranquility as the rain droplets cascade down from her body, washing away all the physical boundaries. The lyrics of this song encourage the listener to feel the romance and the joy of falling in love.

This is my favorite song of Rafi sahab, as I sing it since 1970,when this picture was released in that year. It was also played in Binaca Geet Mala in 1970. Top song sung by Rafi sahab.
