Sunday
Molly Johnson Lyrics

(C. Ross/M. Johnson)

On this sunny Sunday afternoon
Just a lazy wasted day in June

Let the world slip away
On this almost perfect afternoon
Can't we stay in bed all day?
Just this one day
This golden Sunday with you

Watching clouds drift
Gently by all day
Wondering if you'll just
Come down and play

Let the world slip away
On this almost perfect afternoon
Can't we stay in bed all day?
Just this one day
This golden Sunday with you

Can't it be easy
Just to be true
Just like a photograph of you
Fades in time, don't let it fade from view

Cause i know that my love
Can easily buy
Happy days filled with golden times
Even on a rainy day

Feel the kiss of afternoon's bright sun
Feel yourself completely come undone

Let the world slip away
On this almost perfect afternoon
Can't we stay in bed all day
Just this one day, this golden Sunday with you (x3)

Feel yourself completely come undone

Overall Meaning

The song "Sunday" by Molly Johnson is a beautiful and contemplative ballad about enjoying the simple pleasures of life with someone special. The opening lines create a lazy and relaxed mood, as the singer describes a "sunny Sunday afternoon" that feels like a "lazy wasted day in June." The world slips away as they focus on this perfect moment, and the singer sets the scene for an idyllic day spent in bed with their lover.

As the song continues, the singer muses on the passage of time and the fleeting nature of happiness. They watch the clouds drift by and wonder if their lover will come play with them, fully embracing the carefree spirit of the day. The chorus repeats the desire to stay in bed and let the world slip away, emphasizing the blissful contentment of the moment.

The bridge of the song introduces a note of wistfulness, as the singer recognizes that happy moments like these are ephemeral and can fade away like a photograph. However, they also express the conviction that their love is powerful enough to create happy days, even on rainy ones. The song ends with the evocative image of feeling yourself "completely come undone," a testament to the sheer pleasure and abandon of the moment.

Overall, Molly Johnson's "Sunday" is a lovely tribute to the serene beauty of a lazy day spent with someone you love. It celebrates the importance of taking time to enjoy life's small pleasures and appreciate the fleeting moments of happiness that make life worth living.

I wonder how on Earth is Molly Johnson able to pronounce the word "afternoon" the North American way in the lyrics because the way how the melody is crafted, the word "afternoon" lends it self to being pronounced as "ah-fternoon" whenever I sing the first line in my head 'cause it flows more smoothly like that.
