For more than twenty years he has been releasing, to only marginal commercial and critical success, playful and transgressive albums on labels in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. In his lyrics and his other writing he makes seemingly random use of decontextualized pieces of continental (mostly French) philosophy, and has built up a personal world he says is "dominated by values like diversity, orientalism, and a respect for otherness." He is also known in certain circles outside the U.S. as a producer. He is fascinated by identity, Japan, the avant-garde, time travel and sex. Live Momus shows are rare but when he does perform he often sings the crowd favourite 'maf' from the Stars Forever LP.
He wears a patch over his right eye because he lost the use of it after contracting acanthamoeba keratitis from a contact lens case washed with Greek tap water.

Love Isn't A Right
Momus Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Love isn't a right that's got to be learned.
Maybe you spent your natural life
loving husband or loving wife;
were you loving and was your love returned?
Love's nobody's fool and nobody's slave,
Love won't go to school and learn to behave.
If Love can go it comes back again.
Love will haunt us from cradle to the grave.
Love's a whisper, Love's a shout,
Love's a flame that could blow out,
Love's all beauty but make it a duty
and Love will lie right down and die.
Love, Love is a germ you'll never resist.
Love, Love's the eternal will-o-the-whisp.
Follow him through the darkest day,
Love will glimmer and light your way,
but grab at him and he flickers away out of sight.
Love's enchanted, don't take it for granted,
Follow him, isn't a right.
The song "Love Isn't A Right" by Momus is a reflective contemplation on the nature of love and how it is earned, learned, and not to be taken for granted. The lyrics speak to how love cannot be given freely without effort or return. It emphasizes the importance of loving and being loved in return.
The first verse of the song discusses how love must be earned and learned. It suggests that simply being married or in a committed relationship does not guarantee love from one's partner. Love requires effort and investment in the other person in order to be truly earned. The second verse speaks to the power of love and how it cannot be forced or controlled. Love is not a passive emotion, but an active force that must be allowed to exist and grow on its own. The third verse describes love as something magical and transformative, but also something that can be easily lost if not treated with respect.
The chorus of the song echoes the main message that love is not something that can be taken for granted. Love is much like a will-o'-the-wisp, a mysterious and elusive creature that can only be followed but never captured. The song emphasizes the importance of following and pursuing love, but also acknowledges that love is not a guaranteed right.
