For more than twenty years he has been releasing, to only marginal commercial and critical success, playful and transgressive albums on labels in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan. In his lyrics and his other writing he makes seemingly random use of decontextualized pieces of continental (mostly French) philosophy, and has built up a personal world he says is "dominated by values like diversity, orientalism, and a respect for otherness." He is also known in certain circles outside the U.S. as a producer. He is fascinated by identity, Japan, the avant-garde, time travel and sex. Live Momus shows are rare but when he does perform he often sings the crowd favourite 'maf' from the Stars Forever LP.

Virtual reality
Momus Lyrics

When I dream, oh
You can walk and you can talk in virtual reality
All you've got to do is dream
You can have whatever you want in virtual reality
All you've got to do is dream
Have virtually anything in virtual reality
In moments when I want you
In moments when I want you so
All I've got to do is dream
In moments when I need you
In moments when I need you so
This is just like the real thing, only better
It's reality only better
In moments when I want you
In moments when I want you so
All I've got to do is dream
In moments when I need you
In moments when I need you so
What's real to me, what's make-believe
I don't even care any more
When I dream
When I dream, oh
In moments when I want you
In moments when I want you so
All I've got to do is dream
In moments when I need you
In moments when I need you so
All I've got to do is dream
All you've got to do is dream
The song "Virtual Reality" by Momus is primarily about escaping reality through dreams and the concept of virtual reality. The lyrics suggest a longing for a perfect world that can only be found in dreams or virtual reality. The line "you can walk and you can talk in virtual reality, all you've got to do is dream" suggests that one can control their experience in virtual reality just like they can control their dreams. The song explores the idea that the lines between reality and imagination can become blurred.
The repetition of "In moments when I want you, in moments when I need you" suggests that the desire for this perfect world is strong enough to make the singer seek it out in their dreams and through technology. The lines "what's real to me, what's make-believe, I don't even care anymore" further convey the idea that the singer has given up trying to distinguish between reality and their own imagination. The phrase "it's reality only better" highlights the idea that virtual reality can offer a better alternative to the real world.
