Disintegration
Monarchy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You and me
Hold our breath and count to three
I want so much
To give you my everything

Disintegration
Suffocation
My life is taken
Annihilation

Save my love for you
I'm saving my love for you
I save my love for you
I'm saving my love for you

There's a beating inside of me
Open up we can take it slowly
Let's dissolve our humanity
You found the beat of my heart my heart beat

Oh so free
Give in to you endlessly
Live for your touch
Never have I died so much

Disintegration
Suffocation

My life is taken
Annihilation

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Monarchy's song Disintegration depict a romantic relationship that takes a destructive turn. The song opens with the words "you and me, hold our breath and count to three", implying that the two people involved are initiating something together, potentially referencing the start of a sexual encounter. The lines "I want so much, to give you my everything" express a deep desire to fully commit to the other person emotionally and physically. However, the chorus reveals the negative consequences of this intensity: "disintegration, suffocation, my life is taken, annihilation". These lines signify the slow destruction of the singer's life and identity, perhaps due to losing themselves in the relationship or being consumed by their partner's expectations.

The verses that follow continue to explore the singer's inner experience. The line "There's a beating inside of me", could represent the singer's heart, either quickening due to the thrill of the relationship or struggling to cope with the intensity of it. The words "let's dissolve our humanity" suggest that the relationship has taken over the singer's sense of self, causing them to question what is real and what is artificial. Despite the self-destruction that comes with the relationship, the singer still seems to cling to it, expressing that they are "saving my love for you" repeatedly in the chorus.

Overall, Disintegration is a complex portrayal of a romantic relationship that is both all-consuming and destructive. It captures the universal experience of losing oneself in love and the intense emotions that can come with it. The song's lyrics are further amplified by the haunting electronic soundscapes that make it captivating and emotionally charged.

"you dangle on the leash
of your own longing;
your need grows teeth."
— Margaret Atwood.

I remembered a talk I had with a friend about Dita in this video, like if she was "lust itself", which is so right. She is lust itself in this video and her suffering is from not being able to act upon it. She cannot allow herself to be genuine and act upon who she is, to the point that denying herself for so long ends up in extreme and excessive acts of self-indulgence (the orgies with both men and women, the fire, the destruction of the house foundation, maybe her own mental foundations, indicating the corruption of her mind or her mental stability? This amount of destruction, chaos, and impulsivity certainly resembles someone who is in horrible despair and mental crisis)

Self-retention leads towards inner abuse.
Loyalty (in this case, loyalty for her husband) and self control are supposed to be a virtue, but putting these things above your own self and your own needs for too long is incredibly self destructive-- an abuse towards your own self--- and this video shows it with such intimate detail and accuracy that it's even painful to watch.
