Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I does what I does, do what I do
Your hustle the same to me, here's something new
We tired of that junk that you sing in the booth
You know we the truth, let me give you this proof
Call 911, better ring the alarm
When this come on they be droppin' them bombs
We tired of hearin' them same old five songs
Man I've just been wanting to turn that ish off

I swear the game might be over
Somebody give them some Folger's
'Cause you can't be sleepin' on Mono
And you can't see me with no photo
I'm tryna change up the world
I'm focused on my baby girl
And even though she only one
She know you ain't talkin' about nothin'

It's like we've gotten away late, oh (oh)
It's like we're scared to take the chance oh oh
'Cause I'mma let you know
You diggin' that shit really hard
And I don't got feelin's for that
When that shit dropped I forgot
My mind is way over there

The code red right here (code red right here)
Right here, right here
Code red right here (code red right here)
Right here, right here
Turn off the radio, damn right
We don't hear real shit no mo'
Turn off the radio, damn right
We don't hear real shit no mo'
Shit no mo', shit no mo'
Shit no mo', shit no mo'
Turn off the radio
I really wanna hear real shit

You're trying so hard to cross over
And just end up gettin' looked over
The label ain't reachin' they quotas
And we are the money's the motive
Don't like that, don't be that
Don't sound like
A state of emergency hold up

It's like we've gotten away late, oh (oh)
It's like we're scared to take the chance oh oh
'Cause I'mma let you know
You diggin' that shit really hard
And I don't got feelin's for that
When that shit dropped I forgot

This is code red
We takin' risks, we ain't scared
We makin' hits after hits, better play it
Yeah, we got hits stackin' over your head
We so creative (creative) we versatile (tile)
This shit go hard, 808 drum hit that ground
M-O-N-I-To-The-C-O
Tell the DJ hit replay
Rewind two times, DJ
Turn it up like it's your birthday

You dip? We dip!
You dip? We dip!
You dip? We dip oh!
Go head get lit
Dip, dip, dip
Dip, dip, dip
Dip, dip, dip
Code red in this bitch

It's like we've gotten away late, oh (oh)
It's like we're scared to take the chance oh oh
'Cause I'mma let you know
You diggin' that shit really hard
And I don't got feelin's for that
When that shit dropped I forgot
My mind is way over there

The code red right here (code red right here)
Right here, right here
Code red right here (code red right here)
Right here, right here
Turn off the radio, damn right
We don't hear real shit no mo'
Turn off the radio, damn right
We don't hear real shit no mo'
Shit no mo', shit no mo'
Shit no mo', shit no mo'
Turn off the radio
I really wanna hear real shit

You dip? We dip!
You dip? We dip!
You dip? We dip oh!
Go head get lit

Ay, ay, ay
Huh, huh, huh, huh
Huh, huh, huh, huh

Huh, huh, huh, huh
Huh, huh

Overall Meaning

The song "Code Red" by Monica feat. Missy Elliott & Laiyah is a call to the music industry to stop churning out the same old junk and start focusing on creating meaningful music. Monica states that she does what she does, and she does not pay attention to what others are doing in the industry. She is tired of hearing the same five songs on the radio, and she considers it a state of emergency. The chorus of the song emphasizes that it's time to take action and make a change by turning off the radio and searching for real and authentic music.

The track also denounces the music industry for trying too hard to cross over without focusing on creativity or versatility. The message seems to be that they shouldn't aim to please everyone but instead stay true to who they are and create music from the heart. Furthermore, the song asks for people to take risks and not be afraid because if they do so, they will make hits that are worth it.

In summary, "Code Red" is a song about accountability, creativity, and authenticity in the music industry. Monica, Missy Elliot, and Laiyah call out the music industry for its lack of growth and reliance on the same formulas, especially when it comes to the mainstream. They encourage listeners to be true to themselves and find music that speaks to them rather than relying on what's widely available and heavily promoted on the airwaves.

This track is CLASSIC. Traditionally, 90s era R&B albums had preludes and interludes which had the "overproduced" sound some people are complaining about here. This track just reminded me of all the great R&B that USED to be. Kudos...

After a few listen, this is really catchy and makes me want to dance.. Great job Monica at doing something different!

Bolanle Akapo

There absolutely nothing wrong with this track.. She did something different from her R&B, I guess it's high time those complaining should enter the studio and drop your own album. Laiyah voice killed it.. Code red baby.. Love you diva

I think this is refreshing for Monica. Many fans and critics of Monica always complain that she plays it safe and doesn't do uptempos but when she tries to give you something fresh you're still not satisfied. Honestly I feel some of Monica's fans and critics equally keep her in a box. I like this from Monica.

+mydreamz8809 Exactly, and acting like she hasn't done out of the box songs like this before. She has done some on quote a few albums. I personally really like the song.. There's just some vocal bits that I don't think are fitting to the song, otherwise, I love the song.

This is perhaps the one song on CODE RED that may or may not grow on you. It's not Monica's typical sound but I'm sort of feeling the spacey/techno-ish trance it can put you into. I'm sure it will turn off some of her die-hard listeners but I think it will welcome new ears.
