To No Avail
Monika Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where's that day?
Time has covered it with dust
Far away, as far away as I can run
I'll be expecting you, expecting you
To fill me with a hug
I'll be remembering your eyes, remembering
The greatest things they swear
Hide the sun, hide the sun
Before I cry
Cause I don't dear
Never dear to do the night
Whenever memories rebuilt the faith
You'll be calling feeling in the air
And I'll be waiting day and night
I'll be waiting day and night
I'll be waiting for you every day and night
I'll be waiting every day and night

You're in the air
Everywhere I go I need your side

You're in the air
Everywhere I go I need your side

Overall Meaning

In Monika's song "To No Avail," the first verse begins with an expression of longing for a past time that seems to have been lost. The image of time covered with dust suggests a sense of nostalgia and distance from the present. The singer wishes to run as far away as possible to escape from the pain of this loss. However, despite this desire, they express an expectation of being comforted by someone, to be "filled with a hug." The next line remembers the eyes of the same individual, suggesting they once provided comfort and happiness, though those moments are now gone.

In the chorus, the singer asks for the sun to be hidden, possibly symbolizing the need to hide emotions that might surface in the form of tears. They express a fear of the night and its associated darkness. Memories, however, are depicted as a source of hope, something that can rebuild faith. It is implied that the person the singer is longing for will call to them, and they will be waiting, day and night, for this call. They end the chorus repeating their willingness to wait for this person, every day and night.

The second half of the song repeats the idea that the person the singer longs for is everywhere they go, and they need them by their side. This suggests a sense of attachment and codependence. The song overall portrays the singer's longing for someone who provided comfort and happy moments in the past, but who is no longer with them. The memories of their time together offer some solace and hope for a reunion, but the pain is still felt, and the singer is left waiting.
