Criminal
Monika Marija Lyrics

What if what we had was strong
Strong enough to give us everything we hoped and dreamed
It didn't make it easier
I guess I have a lot to learn
Am I a criminal
Have I just broken something that I really need
Would you stay with me, come back home to me
Would we get it all back
Am I a criminal? Am I a thief?
I have nothing left to say
Time is pulling you away
Distance getting bigger
Now everything just starts to fade
It didn't make it easier
Still waiting for a miracle
Am I a criminal
Am I a thief
Have I just broken something that I really need
Would you stay with me, come back home to me
Would we get it all back
Am I a criminal? Am I a thief?
I'm out of alibis
I finally realise
It could be easier
But it's never easier...
The lyrics to Monika Marija's song Criminal describe the internal struggle of a person who questions whether their actions were justified in a past relationship. The person wonders if what they felt was wrong and if they were a criminal or a thief for potentially destroying something valuable. They question whether what they had with their partner was strong enough to survive and if they would ever regain what they lost.
The lyrics are emotionally charged, dealing with themes of love, loss and regret. Despite feeling remorseful and acknowledging that they have much to learn, the person still feels unsure and uncertain about their future.
The chorus repeatedly asks the question, "Am I a criminal? Am I a thief?" This repetition adds to the emotional intensity of the song, highlighting how the person is grappling with their past actions and their impact. In the bridge, the person admits to being out of alibis and finally realizing that it could have been easier but it never is.
Overall, the lyrics to Criminal are a powerful exploration of the aftermath of a relationship and the internal turmoil that comes with questioning one's past actions.
