The Duke
Monster Magnet Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on,
Checking out the office girls on a Friday afternoon
Well she's got the shape I need for the mine to break too soon
It's all dead moons and chicken bones
And child don't you fear
You'll be singing in a higher purpose
Now your super nature's clear
Yeah, it all comes near

Well I swear I did you baby
Back in 49 in vain
When the devil lost the big war
But he figured out a way
Now I watch and make the world come
And in dollars due thus die
And I praise the day the duke of super nature's coming back
Is coming back
Is coming back

My old pal Icarus rode too close to the sun
And folks tend to get off sand
When they see how the job gets done
Now close your eyes, and pay no mind to the circles round your head
The answer to those questions
Is right here in my own bed
Yeah, oh
In my own bed
Hit it

Well I swear I did you baby
Back in 49 in vain
When the master lost the big one
But he figured out a way
Now I watch and make the world come
And in dollars due thus die
And I praise the day the duke of super nature's coming back

Is coming back now
Yeah

Overall Meaning

The Duke by Monster Magnet is a song full of cryptic lyrics. The song speaks of the Devil and how he lost the big war, but figured out a way to make the world come in dollars due, and thus die. The Duke of Super nature is coming back, and his return is praised throughout the song. The lyrics somewhat seem to refer to the idea of a corrupt society that is controlled by an evil force, which is the Devil in this song's context. The office girls on the Friday afternoon represent the mundane life that people are stuck in, while the Duke's return is described as a higher purpose, indicating that he is coming back to save the world from the corrupt forces. The lyrics also mention that to find the answer to the questions, one should pay no mind to the circles around their heads and just look within themselves.

The song is full of metaphors and symbolism that can be interpreted in different ways. It seems to embody the dark, occult-like themes that Monster Magnet often features in their music, as evidenced by the reference to dead moons and chicken bones. The song could be interpreted as a commentary on the state of the world and how it is controlled by corrupt corporations or governments.

"Milking The Stars is a "re-imagined" version of Last Patrol featuring four new songs and live tracks. It's not a re-mix record by the current definition. It's more like Last patrol in a "what if?" style alternative reality." - Dave Wyndorf

I don't care what it is--I'm gettin' a copy...gotta say though, I think The Last Patrol's mix really sucked. Very flat & not very lush at all. I guess ya spoiled me with all your other albums. Ever gonna re-release the early stuff like "Poster" or anything from that era?

Stuart Jenkins

Got it. Prefer it to the original Last Patrol. I've loved MM since Spine Of God came out, but I thought that Last Patrol, with the exception of 2 tracks sounded utterly jaded, like a band just going through the motions. This at least sounds like Dave and the boys are enjoying what they're playing.

Stuart Jenkins Given Dave's lyrics in his songs, it makes sense to feel like a great deal of the album was phoned in. It has it's gems like this one and Last Patrol, but on the whole, it isn't as strong an album as their previous endeavors. I can't help but think Dave's new found sobriety plays a large part of that.

Ken Evans Actually, Dave has stated before that he has never written anything while on any substance.
